Eight years ago, I stumbled into the world of blogging with Growing with Nemit.

I had no idea what I was getting into. Even months into it, I was still figuring things out and constantly asking myself, “Why do people even do this? But honestly, it became addictive after a point. I loved writing, even though I wasn’t great at it.

Back then, I was going through an identity crisis. What started as an emotional outlet during my early motherhood days became a full-blown creative blogging journey for Growing with Nemit.

I still remember sitting at my desk at 2 a.m., typing out my experiences I wasn’t sure anyone would read. But here we are – 8 years, 100s of posts, videos, reels, detours, pauses, and comebacks later.

This isn’t your typical anniversary post with tips or lessons. It’s a conversation… a little messy, mostly heartfelt, honest and raw, between me and my blog, as we look back at how far we’ve come.

A Conversation with my Blog – Growing with Nemit

Me: Hey… happy 8th birthday! 
Blog: Hey, you came? I thought maybe this year too you’d skip the anniversary post like always.

Me: Oh come on, I’ve been thinking about you. Life’s just been… a lot.
Blog: You always say that. Yet somehow, you had time for all your travels, reels, and YouTube vlogs. And totally forgot about me?

Me: Okay, ouch. That’s fair. But I didn’t forget. Just… paused. I thought about you a lot, I swear.
Blog: Oh really? So that dusty “drafts” folder was your love language? I’m just saying, we’ve been through a lot together. I kind of miss being your favourite.

Me: You are still my favourite. Don’t tell the YouTube channel, but you’re the one that gave me purpose when I was feeling lost. In July 2017, when I felt invisible in the whirlwind of new motherhood, you gave me a voice. You helped me rediscover myself when I didn’t know who I was outside being a mom.
Blog: Yeah, I remember. You’d pour your heart into midnight posts while Nemit slept. That “growth spurt” post? Classic. I miss those days!

Me: Me too! You were my secret outlet. I still remember how we jumped and danced when we got monetized in 5 months, and landed our first big collab in 7. We were on a roll!
Blog: Ah, the golden years! When your fingers typed faster than your brain, and we hit ‘publish’ without overthinking.

Me: Haha, yeah! Do you remember our first blogging challenge in Sep 2017 – ‘9 days of womanhood‘ that we actually won? And our favourite, My Friend Alexa with Blogchatter in 2018?
Blog: How could I forget? Those were the glory days! And then in 2019, the A2Z Challenge and your first eBook – ‘Travel India With A Toddler’. You basically squeezed the soul out of both of us that month.

Me: Hehe, I know. Guilty as charged! That writing challenge and eBook drained me. But it showed me my strength and also taught me that I’m not meant to write books, at least not yet. But we grew, didn’t we?
Blog: We did. I loved that you didn’t ghost me during Covid. You kept writing, and you also picked up the camera!

Me: Oh yes! That’s when I started making YouTube videos. I just wanted to document Nemit’s first schooling experience, I mean, online school.
Blog: And turns out, it worked. Your channel grew. Now, you’ve found a new way to tell your stories through your travels. I even clapped when you got monetized last year.

Me: Wait, you know that? Do you watch my vlogs?
Blog: I may be neglected, but I’m still loyal. I watch all your vlogs, the ones that you embed in blogposts and even those that you sneak into the footer.

Me: Aww, thank you. But I miss writing. I miss you.
Blog: I know. I see your drafts open and close like elevator doors. But through it all, you kept growing with Nemit. That’s the real story, isn’t it?

Me: Exactly. He was the reason I started writing, and now he’s the reason I pause. His growth, his changing needs… they shape my content and my choices. That’s why I’m slowly shifting from core parenting to family travel. It just feels right.

Blog: And I’m evolving with you. Quietly. No tantrums. Just waiting for your return.
Me: Thank you… for being that space I can always come back to.

Blog: So… now what? Big relaunch? Content calendar?
Me: Haha, no grand plans. But yes, I do want to revamp a few things. Also, did you see? We made it to Feedspot’s Top 100 Indian Mom Influencers in Jan this year! Then came the Top 100 Mom Blogs in Feb, and in May, we landed a spot in the Top 30 Indian Mom Blogs.

Blog: Wait, we did that? Even with all your “I’ll post tomorrow” drafts and abandoned calendars? Well, I always knew you had it in you. You never stopped growing. And honestly, I’ve grown with you.
Me: Haha, guilty. But I guess something’s still working… even in the chaos. And, thank you!

Blog: You mean… we’re still relevant? So… not quitting on me yet?
Me: Never. I might pause. I might wander. But I’ll always come back. Because this space – you – is home.

Blog: Wow, that’s deep.
Me: Haha, I’ve had practice. But yes, I just wish we get recognized in the travel genre now. That’s where I find myself these days… on the road, with my camera, telling stories.

Blog: One step at a time. You’ve always done it your way and look how far we’ve come.
Me: Yeah. As long as we’re growing (with Nemit), with stories, and with purpose… I’m happy.

Blog: Then go on. Hit publish. And maybe update my theme sometime before 2030?
Me: Haha, okay okay! Like you said… one step at a time. For now, let’s just celebrate us. Happy 8th Anniversary, my Blog!

Still Growing With Nemit and Myself

I used to call this blog my baby. But now, it feels more like a friend I can laugh with, cry with, and be honest with, no matter how long we’ve been apart.

This space has seen every version of me… overwhelmed mom, excited blogger, exhausted creator, backlog vlogger, full-time dreamer. And through it all, it’s been a quiet witness to growing with Nemit, and growing into myself.

No, I’m not consistent.
No, I haven’t figured it all out.
But I’m still here.
And maybe… that’s enough.

Have you heard of this place called ‘Rakchham’ in Himachal Pradesh, India? If not, then you’re not alone. I planned the whole Spiti trip for over a month and still had no idea that such a magical place existed. It was Day 6 of our Spiti valley road trip and as per the itinerary we were supposed to take an overnight halt in Chhitkul. I had really high hopes from the famous ‘Last village of India’ but it failed to impress me. Well, not the place actually. Would you believe me if I tell you that we spent more than 3 hours searching for a decent accommodation in Chhitkul? But still couldn’t find anything satisfactory.

And, that led us to this serene village just 10 kms from the last inhabited village. Let me share some reasons why it’s a better idea to stay in Rakchham and not Chhitkul.

After several days of exploring the rugged beauty of Spiti Valley, we were looking for a place to unwind and soak in nature’s charm, and Rakchham did not disappoint.

Skip Chhitkul, Stay in Rakchham – Here’s Why

Here’s why I think Rakchham is a much better place to stay, whether you’re traveling with kids, parents, or even solo.

1. Less Crowded and More Peaceful

Chhitkul is often busier due to its popularity as the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. Rakchham, on the other hand, remains relatively untouched and tranquil. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway without the usual tourist buzz, Rakchham is ideal.

2. Proximity to Chhitkul

Rakchham is just about 10 km before Chhitkul. You can easily visit Chhitkul during the day and return to the more peaceful surroundings of Rakchham for the night. You get the best of both worlds, proximity to the attractions without the crowds.

3. Scenic Beauty

Rakchham is nestled between towering mountains along the Baspa River, offering breathtaking landscapes. The village provides stunning views of snow-capped peaks. And, its proximity to the river adds a unique charm that sets it apart from Chhitkul.

4. Better Accommodation Options to Stay in Rakchham

Chhitkul has limited stay options due to its remote location. Also, the ones which are really good are even lesser. Rakchham, however, offers a range of stays, including homestays, and riverside camps. The interesting thing about these stays is that these are equipped with modern amenities. I personally felt that the accommodation in Rakchham is more spacious and suitable for families, especially those traveling with kids of elderly.

5. Local Culture and Village Life

Rakchham provides an authentic Himachali village experience. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in local culture, interact with villagers, and experience their lifestyle. For families or those looking to explore the region’s cultural heritage, Rakchham offers a more intimate connection with local traditions.

6. Great for Leisure and Adventure

Rakchham offers a balance between relaxation and adventure. You can take leisurely walks along the Baspa River or go on short treks nearby. Rakchham offers more variety in activities compared to Chhitkul, where options are a bit limited.

7. Less Altitude Stress

Chhitkul is at a higher altitude than Rakchham, which can make it harder for some people, especially kids and seniors, to acclimatize. Rakchham is slightly lower in altitude, which helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness. It still offers stunning views and a true mountain experience.

For travelers, especially families with kids or senior citizens, Rakchham serves as a quieter, more comfortable base while allowing easy access to Chhitkul’s attractions.

Exploring Rakchham: A Hidden Gem

Rakchham may be a small village, but it is surrounded by natural beauty and offers several things to explore. It turned out to be the ideal spot to wrap up our Spiti adventure. While Spiti itself offers stark, rugged beauty, Rakchham gave us a softer, greener landscape that was easy on the eyes and soothing for the soul. After settling into our hotel, we decided to take a stroll through the village to get a feel of the local life.

The village is incredibly picturesque, with traditional wooden homes, apple orchards, and fields of mustard flowers. The cool mountain breeze, coupled with the sound of the river and the sight of towering snow-capped peaks, created a surreal environment for us to unwind.

One of the staff members at our hotel suggested a short trek to a nearby mountain. We were in the mood to explore, so we went for it. The trail wasn’t marked, but the area was open and easy to navigate. It was slightly uphill but not too difficult, even for my mom. We walked through wide fields, slowly making our way to the top. And the view from the top? Totally worth the climb! We could see the entire Rakchham village below, with the Baspa River flowing gently through it. It was one of those views that make you pause and smile.

On our way back, we took a slight detour through an open meadow. A narrow stream was flowing through it, the water coming straight from melting snow up in the mountains. It had carved a small path through the grass before joining the mighty Baspa. A few cows were grazing nearby, totally at peace. We sat there for a long time, doing nothing—just watching the water, the cows, the sky. It felt like time had slowed down.

We spent a lot of time near the river, where Nemit enjoyed skipping stones and simply running around. It was the kind of quiet, peaceful day that was much needed after the hustle of our earlier stops in Kaza and Kalpa. My mother loved sitting by the riverside, making stone towers, admiring the scenery and soaking up the sun.

A Day Trip to Chhitkul

While we chose to stay in Rakchham, Chhitkul is just a 20-minute drive away, making it an easy day trip. The drive from Rakchham to Chhitkul is nothing short of spectacular. The road winds through lush green valleys with the Baspa River flowing alongside, and the sight of Chhitkul’s snow-capped mountains emerging in the distance is breathtaking.

Chhitkul is often referred to as the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border and is the highest inhabited village in the Sangla Valley. We visited the local Chhitkul Monastery, Mathi Temple and spent some time walking through the village, admiring the traditional wooden houses and the stone fences that line the streets.

One of the highlights of our day in Chhitkul was having lunch at the famous Hindustan Ka Aakhiri Dhaba. As the name suggests, it’s the last Indian restaurant on the road leading to the Indo-Tibetan border. We enjoyed a simple yet hearty meal of rajma, kadhi and chawal, which kept us warm in the cool mountain air.

For anyone visiting Chhitkul with kids, I’d recommend taking it slow and enjoying the natural surroundings rather than rushing through the itinerary.

Final Thoughts

Our stay in Rakchham was the perfect conclusion to our family’s road trip to Spiti Valley. It offered us a chance to slow down and reflect on the incredible journey we had just experienced. For anyone planning a trip to Spiti, I’d highly recommend adding Rakchham to your itinerary. It’s a peaceful retreat, away from the crowds, where you can connect with nature and enjoy quality time with your loved ones.

Whether you’re looking to explore the last village of India, Chhitkul, or just relax by the river with a cup of chai in hand, Rakchham has something to offer everyone. It’s the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after you’ve returned home.

When we decided to do a road trip from Bangalore to Northeast India, I knew Arunachal Pradesh would surprise us in many ways. But there was one place we hadn’t really planned for, one that felt more like a blessing than a destination — Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang.

I wasn’t expecting to feel what I felt there. It wasn’t on any must-see list I came across, and yet it turned out to be one of the most peaceful and soulful places we visited on our entire journey.

When we reached, there was no one else there, except the army personnel who maintain the place. And honestly, that made the experience even more special. Maybe not many people know about this Gurudwara, like we didn’t until just a day before (while visiting Sungester lake). Or maybe it’s because getting there involves a short uphill walk, and not everyone is up for that, especially when the weather is not that great.

It had also been raining since morning, so that could be another reason people chose not to visit it. But I’m so glad we didn’t skip it. Some places just find you when you’re meant to experience them and this was definitely one of those.

Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang is also known as Tiger Hill Gurudwara, as it is located on Tiger Hill, the name of the mountain. But why is it called Teesri Udasi?

What is “Teesri Udasi”?

Before I talk about the Gurudwara itself, let me give you a quick background. The word “Udasi” means journey. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus, undertook five major spiritual journeys during his lifetime. These journeys are known as Udasis.

These weren’t simple travels, they were deep spiritual pilgrimages covering vast parts of India and beyond. He covered a distance of around 28,000 km on foot, over a period of 24 years. He travelled across India, South Asia, and even reached parts of the Middle East and Tibet, sharing his message of love, peace, equality, and the oneness of God (Ek Onkar).

During his third Udasi, believed to have taken place between 1514 and 1518, Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Tibet twice. The first time, in 1514, he travelled to Mansarovar and Mount Kailash, and came back to India through the same route.

But the second time, his path was different. He travelled through Nepal, Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and from there, continued towards Lhasa in Tibet.

And it is believed that during this journey, Guru Nanak Dev Ji meditated in a cave right here in Tawang. That very cave has now been turned into a Gurudwara and because it’s associated with his Teesri Udasi, the name stuck.

That’s how this peaceful little place on a hill came to be known as Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang.

Our Journey to Gurudwara Teesri Udasi

We were staying in Tawang and had just started exploring the region. On our very first day of sightseeing, we planned to visit Bumla Pass, PTSO Lake, and Sungester Lake (also known as Madhuri Lake). But since our Bumla permit was scheduled for the next day, we decided to just do the lakes for now.

After soaking in the views at PTSO Lake, we moved ahead towards Sungester, taking the left turn at the Y-junction. Just about 2.6 km from there, something caught our eye, a small Gurudwara tucked at the base of a hill.

Curious, we stopped to check it out. There was something instantly peaceful about it. But since we were on a tight schedule and had planned the day around the lakes, we skipped the trek up to the main Gurudwara on the hill and continued on to Sungester Lake.

But the story didn’t end there.

While returning from the lake, we passed the same spot again. And this time, something tugged at our hearts. There was this unexplainable pull, like the place was quietly calling us back. We paused. Talked about it. We had just one more day in Tawang, and the next day was fully packed. We were finally visiting Bumla Pass, and from there heading straight to Zemithang.

Still, something inside us knew we had to return.

And so we did.

The next day, after visiting Bumla, we were driving back on the same route. We took that turn again. This time, we parked the car and walked up the hill to the Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang.

And I can’t explain it in words, the experience was so peaceful, so soulful, it felt like the place had been waiting for us all along.

Sometimes, it’s the unplanned detours that stay with you the longest. For us, visiting Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang became one of the most heart-touching moments of our entire journey in Arunachal Pradesh.

A Simple Structure, A Strong Presence

The Gurudwara is tucked into the rugged cliffs of the mountain, quite literally built into the rock face. From a distance, it almost looks like it’s growing out of the hill itself, camouflaged by nature. But as you get closer, you begin to notice the bright prayer flags, the modest building, and the narrow path leading up to it.

It’s not a grand or elaborate structure. There are no huge golden domes. Yet, it commands your attention. Maybe it’s the setting, surrounded by towering cliffs and silence or maybe it’s the story behind it. Either way, the moment you see it, you feel a sense of awe and reverence.

The stairs to the Gurudwara are narrow and steep but well-built. And as you climb, the world around you starts to fade, it’s just you, the mountain, and a sacred stillness.

A Place Respected Across Faiths

You may already know that Arunachal Pradesh is known for its monasteries, especially the iconic Tawang Monastery, which is the largest in India and the second-largest in the world. But did you know that Guru Nanak Dev Ji is also deeply respected here?

Locals lovingly refer to him as Nanak Lama. In fact, in some traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, Guru Nanak is seen as an incarnation of Guru Rinpoche. He is also known as Guru Padmasambhava, the saint who brought Buddhism to Tibet. It’s rare and beautiful to see a spiritual figure being embraced across different faiths like this.

This deep sense of mutual respect and shared reverence is what makes this Gurudwara even more special. It stands quietly, high up in the mountains, but holds a powerful space in the hearts of the people from this region, regardless of religion.

The Role of the Indian Army

Since this area is very close to the Indo-China border, the presence of the Indian Army is strong throughout this region. In fact, the Gurudwara itself is maintained by the Army personnel stationed here.

They also serve a simple langar (community meal), and even if you’re not there during langar hours, they’ll always offer you tea or prasad with warmth and humility.

We couldn’t help but feel grateful. Not just for the physical upkeep of the Gurudwara, but for their quiet, constant presence in such a remote and extreme terrain. It’s because of their dedication that this piece of history and faith continues to thrive, high up in the mountains.

Things to Know Before You Go

If you’re planning a trip to Tawang, do make time for this place. Here are a few tips:

• Start early in the day
  The Gurudwara is 25 km from Tawang and 2.6 Km from Y-junction. The weather in high-altitude areas can change quickly. It’s best to start your day early and keep extra time in hand, both in case the weather turns or if you’re planning to visit other places on the same route, like Sungester Lake or Bumla Pass.
• No permit needed
  You don’t need a special permit to visit this Gurudwara, unlike Bumla Pass. But since it’s on the way to Bumla, plan your stop accordingly.
• Located at a High Altitude
  The Gurudwara is situated at around 13,000 feet, so take your time while climbing. The air is thinner, and it’s normal to feel a little breathless. Keep yourself hydrated to prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
• Carry warm clothes
  Even if the sun is out, it can get windy, cloudy and cold, especially at higher altitudes. Layer up and keep a windcheater or warm jacket handy.

• It’s a short uphill walk
  The Gurudwara on the hill is about a 20-30 minute walk from the road. The steps are steep but well-maintained. There are also resting sheds along the route and even a toilet, which makes the climb more manageable, especially for families and older visitors.
• Respect the space
  Though it’s maintained by the Indian Army, this is a sacred place. Cover your head, speak softly, and follow any instructions given on-site.
• Photography is allowed
  You can take photos inside and outside the Gurudwara, but always be mindful if Army personnel are around. Ask if you’re unsure.

There’s a Footwear protocol before entering. Just before reaching the Gurudwara at the top, you’ll find a Joda Ghar (footwear room). Visitors are expected to remove their shoes here and wear the slippers provided. These slippers must be taken off again at the Gurudwara entrance, as a sign of respect.

Most importantly, go with a quiet mind. You don’t have to be religious to feel the peace here.

Final Thoughts

Out of all the places we visited in Arunachal Pradesh, majestic monasteries, misty mountain passes, beautiful valleys — Gurudwara Teesri Udasi in Tawang offered something entirely different.

It gave us stillness.

It reminded me of the strength of simplicity. Of how one man’s journey, centuries ago, still touches lives in the most unexpected corners of the world.

And for that, I’ll always carry this visit close to my heart.

Every road trip we take feels like a new chapter in our travel story. After successfully completing our 15 Days Spiti Valley road trip in May 2024, we knew we were ready for even longer drives. But the big question was, where next? We had so many destination on our minds… Ladakh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal, and even Kashmir. After months of discussion, we finally locked in Arunachal and started planning our Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary!

There were also endless back-and-forths, last-minute doubts, and dramatic change-of-heart moments! In our home, choosing a destination is not as simple as pointing at a map, it’s a full-fledged debate, with arguments, counterarguments, and occasional cold wars. But in the end, Arunachal won. And now, looking back, I can confidently say, it was the best decision ever!

As some of you know, I’ve been sharing our Arunachal Pradesh vlogs on YouTube, and I think it’s finally time to put together our complete itinerary on the blog! I’ve been getting so many DMs on Instagram and even emails asking for trip details, so it makes sense to document everything here. So, here’s our complete Arunachal Pradesh itinerary for you!

Why We Chose Arunachal Pradesh?

Honestly, I didn’t want to go to Arunachal Pradesh. Sumit, on the other hand, had been obsessed with it ever since we started discussing our next trip. At that time, I hadn’t seen a single video or read any post about Arunachal, so I had no idea what to expect. For some reason, I imagined it to be hot, humid, and mostly plains with dense jungles. Not exactly what I was looking for! I was craving for mountains, crisp air, and breathtaking views.

So, we almost ruled out Arunachal and started planning for Sikkim instead.

We spent two full days finalizing our itinerary when we found out that Sikkim’s roads were in terrible shape due to heavy rains. Just to be sure, we reached out to a local homestay owner, and he confirmed that driving there would be tough. Plan cancelled.

I was a little disappointed until, out of nowhere, I stumbled upon a travel video about Arunachal Pradesh. And just like that, I fell in love with this beautiful North-eastern state.

This trip was not just about the drive or stunning views anymore. It was about venturing into one of India’s least explored states, experiencing its raw beauty, and meeting the incredible people who call it home.

Planning Arunachal Road Trip

While researching, we found out that Arunachal has 14 unique tourist circuits, each offering something completely different, be it culture, landscapes, or local experiences. Since we had about 15-20 days, we decided to explore the Tawang and Ziro Circuit. These are two of the most stunning and well-known regions of Arunachal.

These circuits are not only close to each other but also among the most popular. The other circuits are still offbeat and less explored, so we decided to play it safe for this trip.

We planned this road trip in October 2024, during the Dusshera holidays. The land of the rising sun, unexplored valleys, and mystical monasteries was calling us! So, we packed our bags, fueled up our car, and set off on an 18-day advebture covering both Tawang and Ziro.

Whether you’re driving from Bangalore like us, flying in and hiring a cab at Guwahati, or renting a self-drive car, this Arunachal Pradesh itinerary will help you plan an epic trip.

The Ultimate Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary & Guide

We love road trips but hate rigid plans. So, for this 18-day adventure, we didn’t pre-book hotels or stick to a strict itinerary. But one thing we were sure about was covering Bangalore to Siliguri/Tezpur as quickly as possible, since it was just the driving stretch. So, we pushed through long hours on the road, driving about 14-15 hours each day.

Now, if you are not crazy about road trips or such long drives, it’s better to fly to Assam (Guwahati or Tezpur) and hire a cab from there. Or, if you love road trips but can’t drive such long distances with family, or if you are short on days, it’s a good idea to book a self-drive rental from Arunachal itself.

We even thought about transporting our car via a trailer truck, but the cost was too high, so we dropped that idea. So, weigh your options and pick the one that suits your family and travel style best.

Now, let’s begin with the itinerary.

Day 1: Bangalore to Rajamahendravaram, AP | 817 km | 14 hrs

It was a long long drive of about 14 hours. However, the roads were in good condition so the drive was quite smooth. Initially, we had planned to go till Vijayawada but had a few hours in hand before it turned dark, so we went till Rajamundry.

• Drive Highlights: Long but smooth highway drive with decent food stops along the way.
• Stay: La Hospin (INR 3,500 with breakfast)

Day 2: Rajamahendravaram, AP to Balasore, Odisha | 817 Km | 15-16 hrs

• Drive Highlights: Smooth roads, great highways, but speed cameras everywhere. Extreme truck traffic.

• Stay: NOCCI Residency (INR 2,800 with breakfast)
• Decent, clean, comfortable, just what we needed after a tiring drive.

Day 3: Balasore, Odisha to Kanki, WB | 709 Km | 14 hrs 

• Drive Highlights: Toughest day so far! Extremely tiring, bad roads, unbearable traffic.

• Stay: Kanika Dham Lords Inn (INR 3,500 with breakfast)

During the later part of the day, we were driving along the Bihar border and the deserted roads and multiple police vehicles all along the route scared us a lot. The presence of police was a sign that the route was not safe at night.

Day 4: Kanki, WB to Udalguri, Assam | 576 Km | 16 hrs 

• Drive Highlights: Got stuck in traffic at Assam border. Bad road condition, rough patches on the road before Siliguri.

• Stay: Hotel DJ Tower (INR 2,000) – Not a great stay, and no breakfast.

Entering Arunachal Pradesh

Our journey into Arunachal Pradesh began on Day 5, marking the real start of our much-anticipated Arunachal Pradesh itinerary.

There are two main entry points into Arunachal from Assam:

1. Balemu Check Post (closer for those coming from Udalguri).

2. Bhalukpong Check Post (preferred for those coming from Tezpur; better road conditions).

We entered through Balemu as it was more convenient for us.

Day 5: Udalguri, Assam to Shergaon, AR | 110 Km | 7 hrs 

Finally, we entered Arunachal Pradesh. The border was just a 30 min drive from Udalguri, Assam. Since it was raining continuously, the roads were in bad condition. We got to know that the Bhutan border was just a few kilometers from the check post. So, we decided to cross over and visited a famous hanging bridge and viewpoint.

After spending some time in Bhutan, we began our onward journey and chose Shergaon to spend the night.

• Stay: The Willow Resort (INR 4,000) – Beautiful location but food was disappointing.

• Important: An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory to enter Arunachal Pradesh. I’ve shared all the details in my YouTube video below.

If you have time, spend more time exploring Shergaon. It’s a beautiful, unexplored town with so much to offer to its visitors.

Day 6: Shergaon to Sangti Valley | 85 Km | 2-3 hrs 

Our plan was to reach Tawang by evening, but travel has its own surprises! When we reached Dirang, we saw the roads were a mess-landslides, mud, and slippery stretches everywhere. Still hopeful, we moved ahead, only to be stopped by another landslide. With no choice but to change plans, we decided to stay in the peaceful Sangti Valley which is just 10 km from Dirang.

Traveling with kids? Flexibility is key! Unexpected situations are bound to happen, and adapting to changes is the best way to travel stress-free with kids.

On the bright side, we got to have lunch at an army cafeteria in Sapper near Dirang, an amazing experience amidst all the chaos!

• Stay: Lanjom Homestay (INR 3,000 without breakfast) – Beautiful place beside the river.
• Visit the famous Sheep Farm and Kiwi Orchards in Sangti.

Just like Shergaon, Sangti Valley is a hidden gem. If time permits, spend at least 2 nights at this beautiful paradise.

Day 7: Sangti Valley to Tawang | 140 Km | 4-5 hrs 

Our plan was to leave Sangti Valley early morning, have breakfast in Sapper, and reach Tawang before lunchtime. But nature had other plans! It rained all night, and just a few minutes after starting from Sangti, we hit a landslide blocking the road. Instead of waiting, we decided to take a detour to Dirang Monastery.

• Stay: TYK Hotel (INR 3,000 with breakfast) – Decent hotel with great food.

The second half of the day was quite an adventure as we decided to take a detour via a local village road running along the Dirang river. The drive along the raging river was extremely scary but gave another level of adrenaline rush. We reached Tawang quite late at night, exhausted but excited for the days ahead.

Day 8: Exploring Tawang 

Our plan for the day was simple. Apply for the Bumla Pass Permit at the DC office, get it stamped at the Brigade Headquarters and keep it ready for the next day. Enjoy the rest of the day exploring Tawang.

We tried handling the permit ourselves instead of relying on agents, which meant hours of running around, but we finally got it! We really wanted to understand the process so that we could share it with other enthusiastic travelers like us.

• Stay: Cheodar Homestay (INR 2,000 without breakfast) – Basic stay but wonderful hosts and good food.
• Visited Pangateng Tso Lake (PT Tso Lake) & Sangestar Tso (Madhuri Lake).
• Arranged Bumla Pass Permit.
• Had yummy local food at Giant Buddha Temple.
• Tip: Get your permits arranged by your hotel if you don’t want the hassle.

Day 9: Tawang to Zemithang via Bumla Pass | 93 Km | 4 hrs

We started early for Bumla Pass, and the moment we hit the route, we were spellbound! The scenery was surreal, with colors we had never seen before in a landscape. It felt straight out of a fairytale, pristine blue lakes reflecting the sky, golden-brown-red mountains, and vast open stretches with no sign of civilization. It felt as if we had stepped into a different world.

We decided to go to Zemithang from Bumla and stay there for the night. It’s the ‘Last Village’ of Arunachal Pradesh along the Indo-China border, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

• Stay: Pangchen Homestay (INR 2,500 with breakfast) – Warm hospitality, nice stay.
• Covered Bumla Pass (15,200 ft) & Gurudwara Teesri Udasi.
• Tip: Have enough time in hand to soak in the beauty of Bumla Pass. Visiting Bumla Pass & Gurudwara was a highlight of our Arunachal Pradesh itinerary.

Also, this unexpected detour to Zemithang became one of the most special parts of our trip. If you love offbeat places, this village should be on your list!

Stay in Tawang for at least 3-4 days, if possible.

Day 10: Exploring Zemithang & back to Tawang (Kitpi Village) | 70 Km | 3 hrs

After a hearty breakfast, we explored Zemithang and attended a peaceful morning prayer at a local monastery, a truly special experience. By afternoon, we left for Kitpi village, a small village near Tawang.

• Stay: Kitpi Kee Homestay (INR 3,000) – Best stay of the trip! Exceptional hospitality, tried homemade rice wine.
• Visited the Holy Tree of Grong Kukpa and many hanging bridges. Attended a special prayer at Guru Padmasambhaba Monastery.
• Tip: Spend at least two days in Zemithang to soak in its serene beauty and rich culture.

Day 11: Kitpi Village (Tawang) to Bomdila | 174 Km | 5 hrs

We started early, making a quick stop at Chagzam Bridge, a stunning 15th-century iron suspension bridge. After returning to our homestay for breakfast, we visited the Tawang Monastery & Tawang Market. Later, we set off towards Bomdila, stopping at the breathtaking Nuranang Falls, a towering 100m waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. We also crossed the Sela Pass and enjoyed some time at Sela Lake.

Jang Falls

• Stay: Monshing Homestay (INR 2,500 without breakfast) – Basic stay.
• Visited the Chagzam Bridge (a true engineering marvel), Nuranang Falls (also known as Jang Falls or Bong Bong Falls), Tawang Monastery, Tawang Market, Sela Pass (13,700 ft) and Sela Lake.

Short Itinerary – Tawang Circuit (10 Nights)

Day 1 – Tezpur/Guwahati to Shergaon (2N).
Day 2 – Explore Shergaon.
Day 3 – Shergaon to Tawang (3N) – Explore Tawang Market.
Day 4 – Bumla Pass, Gurudwara Teesri Udasi, Madhuri Lake, PT TSo Lake.
Day 5 – Tawang Monastery, Urgelling Monastery, Giant Buddha Statue.
Day 6 – Tawang to Zemithng (2N) – Explore Zemithang.
Day 7 – Explore Zemithang (Holy Tree of Grong Kukpa, Guru Padmasambhaba Monastery, Gorsam Chorten Buddhist stupa, Hanging Bridges.
Day 8 – Zemithang to Kitpi Village (1N) – Day at Leisure.
Day 9 – Kitpi Village to Sangti Valley via Sela Pass (2N) – Visit Chagzam Bridge, Jang Falls, Jaswantgarh War Memorial, Sela Lake.
Day 10 – Explore Sangti Valley – Visit Sheep Farm, Apple and Kiwi Orchards.
Day 11 – Sangti Valley to Tezpur/Guwahati – Visit Dirang Monastery, hot springs and Bomdila Monastery.

Note: If you’re only doing the Tawang Circuit, you can start your return journey from here. But if you have more time, continue to explore the Ziro Circuit like we did!

Day 12: Bomdila to Ziro | 362 Km | 8 hrs

It’s a long, tiring drive through scenic but challenging roads. We reached Ziro late in the evening amidst light rain. Instead of heading out, we kept it simple, cooked Maggi and tea at our homestay and called it an early night.

• Stay: AMI Homestay (INR 2,000) – Basic stay with a private kitchen. Perfect for groups.

Day 13: Ziro to Tezpur | 236 Km | 6 hrs

Ziro was a cultural delight! We visited an Apatani home, where locals welcomed us warmly, sharing their traditions and food.

• Stay: KRC Palace (INR 3,700 without breakfast)
• Explored Ziro, visited Pamu Yalang, Shree Sidheshwar Nath Temple.
• If time allows, visit Ziro Point & Koloriang.

Short Ziro Itinerary – 3 Nights

Day 11- Sangti Valley to Bomdila (1N) – Visit Dirang Monastery, hot springs and Bomdila Monastery.
Day 12 – Bomdila to Ziro (2N)
Day 13 – Explore Ziro – Pamu Yalang, Shree Sidheshwar Nath Temple, Paddy Fields, Ziro Point & Koloriang.
Day 14 – Ziro to Tezpur/Guwahati

Day 14: Tezpur to West Bengal | 637 Km | 14-15 hrs 

A long and tiring day on the road. We retraced our route and checked into the same hotel for the night.

• Stay: Kanika Dham Lords Inn (INR 3,500 with packed breakfast)

Day 15: West Bengal to Mirzapur | 700 Km | 14-15 hrs 

Instead of taking the Kolkata route, we explored an alternate path, making the long drive slightly more interesting.

• Stay: Konark Grand (INR 4,400 with packed breakfast) – Comfortable stay.
• Tip: Better to stay in Varanasi, if you can find budget-friendly options.

Day 16: Mirzapur to Nagpur | 667 Km | 12-13 hrs 

• Stay: Spring Dale (INR 3,200 without breakfast) – Simple stay.

Day 17: Nagpur to Hyderabad/Bangalore | 533 Km | 10-11 hrs

We decided to take a break in Hyderabad for a comfortable end to our rugged trip. If you’re up for it, you can drive straight to Bangalore instead.

• Stay: Lemon Tree Hitech City (INR 6,700) – Super comfortable stay and great food.

Day 18: Hyderabad to Bangalore | 575 Km | 8-10 hrs 

The final leg of our journey! We took it easy, enjoying the smooth highways, reminiscing about the past 18 days of adventure before finally reaching home.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of vegetarian local dishes in Arunachal Pradesh, which are packed with fresh ingredients, earthy flavors, and age-old traditions.

During our family road trip across Arunachal, I found that every region has its own unique way of cooking. Many dishes use bamboo shoots, millet, and homemade spices. Some of the best meals weren’t from fancy restaurants but from small home cafes and homestays. Locals served food straight from their kitchens, making every bite special.

If you’re visiting Arunachal, don’t forget to explore its local food beyond the usual. Here are five vegetarian local dishes in Arunachal Pradesh that you must try, each with a distinct taste and experience!

1. Thukpa (Noodle Soup)

There’s nothing more comforting than a steaming bowl of thukpa on a chilly evening in Arunachal Pradesh. I still remember stopping by a small eatery near Tawang Monastery after a long, cold day of exploring. As I took the first sip of the mild, aromatic broth, it felt like a warm hug. Thukpa is packed with fresh vegetables and handmade noodles. It’s more than just food, it’s an experience.

• What is it? A hearty Tibetan noodle soup made with vegetables, herbs, and a mild broth.
• Where to Try?
  • Tawang Monastery Canteen (Tawang) – The peaceful surroundings make it even more special.
  • Ete Coffee (Ziro) – They serve it with a modern touch.

2. Zan (Millet Porridge)

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first tried zan, a thick millet porridge that the locals swear by. It’s a staple food for the Monpa and Apatani tribes, especially in winter. It’s simple yet hearty, often served with sauteed greens or a spicy chutney. We were invited to an Apatani home for a meal in Ziro, where I had my first bowl of Zan. It’s not something you’ll easily find in restaurants, so staying at a local homestay in Ziro or Mechuka is the best way to enjoy this authentic dish.

• What is it? A staple dish made with millet flour, served with sauteed vegetables or chutney.
• Where to Try?
  • Local Homestays in Ziro or Mechuka: Many families offer this as part of their meals.
  • Ngunu Ziro Cafe (Ziro): Known for showcasing Apatani flavors.

3. Pika Pila (Apatani Pickle)

Pickles have a way of turning a simple meal into something unforgettable, and Pika Pila is proof of that. This Apatani specialty is made with bamboo shoots, local chilies, and mustard oil. It’s spicy, tangy, and incredibly addictive. I tasted it in the Apatani home in Ziro where we were invited. It was served alongside steaming rice and dal, it instantly elevated the whole meal! If you want to try it fresh, visit the Apatani village, where locals will happily share their homemade versions. Or, if you’d like to take a jar home, the Tawang local markets sell some fantastic varieties. No trip is complete without bringing back a taste of local dishes in Arunachal Pradesh, and this one makes for the perfect souvenir!

• What is it? A tangy and spicy traditional pickle made with bamboo shoots, local spices, and oil. Usually served as a side.
• Where to Try?
  • Apatani Villages (Ziro): Experience the authentic taste during a homestay.
  • Tawang Local Markets: You can taste and buy jars from vendors.

4. Bamboo Shoot Fry – Local Dishes in Arunachal Pradesh

Bamboo shoots are a big part of Arunachal’s cuisine. When stir-fried with just a hint of salt, garlic, and mild spices, they have a subtle crunch and a delicate earthy flavor. They taste nothing like what you might expect! I had my best plate at Dragon Restaurant in Tawang, where they served it as a side dish with rice and dal. But the most memorable version was at a tiny home cafe in Bomdila, where the owner cooked it fresh using bamboo from her backyard! If you love trying local cuisine, then do try local dishes in Arunachal Pradesh, this one deserves a spot on your plate.

• What is it? A stir-fried dish of fresh bamboo shoots seasoned with mild spices and herbs.
• Where to Try?
  • Dragon Restaurant (Tawang): A popular spot for local delicacies.
  • Home Cafes in Dirang and Bomdila: Enjoy authentic, freshly cooked bamboo shoot dishes.

5. Chura Sabzi (Yak Cheese Curry)

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about yak cheese, but one spoonful of chura sabzi changed my mind. This dish combines fermented yak cheese with seasonal vegetables, creating a creamy, tangy curry. It pairs beautifully with rice or buckwheat bread.

You can only find it in places where the Monpa community resides. The most authentic versions are at Monpa homestays in Tawang and Dirang. If you prefer a restaurant setting, Hotel Buddha in Tawang serves the best authentic version. This dish is a true hidden gem among local dishes in Arunachal Pradesh and offers a taste that’s both unique and unforgettable.

• What is it? A unique curry made with fermented yak cheese and seasonal vegetables.
• Where to Try?
  • Monpa Homestays (Tawang or Dirang): Experience this dish as part of traditional Monpa meals.
  • Hotel Buddha (Tawang): Known for serving authentic Monpa cuisine.

We had actually planned this Spiti trip twice! If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you probably already know the story. But for those who don’t, let me fill you in!

The first time, we only made it to day 2, reaching as far as Sangla Valley, near Chhitkul. Unfortunately, I started experiencing severe gallbladder pain, and we had no choice but to turn back. We were disappointed but had to put our plans on hold and return to my mom’s place in Delhi.

After recovering from gallbladder surgery and taking a month’s rest, we decided to restart our journey. However, this time, my husband could only get a week off from work compared to the two weeks we had originally planned. So, we kept things simple and planned a shorter, more focused route, making the most of our limited time in Spiti.

This was an incredible journey, especially as we traveled with our 8-year-old son, Nemit, and my 68-year-old mother. If you’ve been planning a road trip to Spiti but are unsure about the route or logistics, I hope this itinerary will help you plan an unforgettable adventure of your own.

Bangalore to Spiti Valley Itinerary

You must be wondering why we never visited these places in North India when we were living in Delhi. Well, the reason is simple. We travel with a kid! We did a few road trips with our son Nemit when he was younger. But then, we had to book a cab with driver because he needed our undivided attention throughout the travel. We only started going on self-driven road trips a few years ago. Spiti Valley was our second long road trip after Rajasthan, which was also a 9-day long road trip. So, you see, we were just waiting for Nemit to grow a little older so that long drives would be more manageable for all of us. But, as always, distances have never stopped us from exploring new places!

We did this Bangalore to Spiti Valley road trip in our Tata Punch car. Here’s a quick 15-day itinerary of Spiti Valley road trip.

Days 1-3: Bangalore to Delhi

We’ve already done Bangalore to Delhi by road twice in the last year. Both times, we took the similar route through 7 states – Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. However, we stayed at different locations on each trip.

I have already shared a post about our first trip from Bangalore to Delhi by road. In this post, I will be sharing the itinerary for our second trip.

Day 1: Bangalore to Nagpur

• Distance: ~1098 km | Time: 20 hours
• We kicked off our journey from Bangalore quite early in the morning. It was a smooth but extremely tiring drive on NH44.
• Hotel: Treebo Tryst Median Inn, Nagpur (Not recommended).

My advice: I wouldn’t recommend driving such long distances with family. It’s tiring, uncomfortable and risky. 

Day 2: Nagpur to Jhansi

• Distance: ~607 km | Time: 13-14 hours
• Another long day on the road, and it wasn’t as smooth as we hoped. The roads in MP were full of rough patches, and we had to be extra cautious with cattle roaming freely on the highways. Despite the challenges, our excitement kept us going. We reached Jhansi around 9 pm for an overnight halt, tired but relieved to rest before the next leg of our journey.
• Hotel: Regenta Place, Jhansi (Highly recommended).

Day 3: Jhansi to Delhi

• Distance: ~475 km | Time: 10-11 hours
• We set out after a hearty breakfast at Regenta Place and made our way to Delhi. The drive was smoother, but the traffic as we neared the city slowed us down. By evening, we finally reached my mom’s place, tired but relieved to be home. It felt great to end the long journey with a warm welcome and a chance to rest.

• Bangalore to Hyderabad
• Hyderabad to Narsinghpur
• Narsinghpur to Delhi

After reaching Delhi, we took a week-long break to relax and recharge before continuing our journey to Spiti Valley. To keep the itinerary in order, I’ll start from Day 4, which marks the first day of our Spiti trip from Delhi.

Day 4: Delhi to Narkanda/Rampur Bushahr

As I mentioned earlier, we only had two days to travel during our first attempt before we had to turn back. In those two days, we drove from Delhi to Narkanda on Day 1, and from Narkanda to Sangla on Day 2. However, after a month’s break following my gallbladder surgery, we resumed our trip. And that time, we skipped Narkanda, heading straight to Rampur Bushahr. While Narkanda is a beautiful spot, you can skip it on the way to Spiti and instead stay there on your return journey. The choice is yours!

• • Option 1: Narkanda (10 hours from Delhi) If you want to enjoy beautiful views and cooler weather, stop at Narkanda. It’s a charming hill station, perfect for relaxing after the long drive. Or, you can skip it and drive directly to Rampur Bushahr.
  • Hotel: 13 Forest B&B, Kotgarh

• Option 2: Rampur Bushahr (11 hours from Delhi) For a quicker night halt, Rampur is your option. It’s a little further, but a great place to rest before continuing to Spiti.
• Hotel: C Square Homestay

Day 5: Rampur Bushahr to Nako

• • Distance: ~202 km | Time: 6-7 hours
  • After breakfast at Hotel Mahesh in Jhakri, we headed to Nako. The scenic drive with river views was stunning, and we took several short breaks for fuel and snacks. Nako village, known for its picturesque lake, was a peaceful stop.
  • Hotel: Rikpa Homestay, family room with a single and double bed.

Day 6: Nako to Kaza

• • Distance: ~110 km | Time: 6-7 hours
  • On the way, we visited Gue Mummy Stupa, which was fascinating and surreal. The drive was thrilling, and we reached Kaza by evening. We stayed at a riverside homestay with stunning views.
  • Hotel: Spiti River View Homestay

Day 7: Kaza

This day was all about exploring the iconic spots around Kaza. We visited:

• • Chicham Bridge (the highest bridge in Asia),
  • Key Monastery (a 1,000-year-old Tibetan monastery),
  • The scenic villages of Kibber, Langza, Hikkim (home to the world’s highest post office), and Komic (one of the highest villages in the world).
  • Hotel: Spiti River View Homestay

Day 8: Kaza to Kalpa

• Distance: ~215 km | Time: 8-9 hours
• After breakfast, we left for Kalpa. This long drive took us through winding roads and breathtaking landscapes. When we reached Kalpa, it started raining so we couldn’t explore anything that day. The next day, we left for Chhitkul. But, luck took us back to Kalpa and then we visited Kalpa Monastery and Kinner Kailash view point.
• Hotel suggestion: The White Castle, Kalpa

Day 9: Kalpa to Chhitkul to Rakchham

• Distance: ~100 km | Time: 5-6 hours
• From Kalpa, we set off for Chitkul, the last village on the India-Tibet border. The road to Chitkul is known for being extremely dangerous, so it’s important to drive with extra caution. After reaching Chitkul, we had lunch at the famous “Hindustan ka Aakhiri Dhaba”. The quaint, peaceful vibe of Chitkul was the perfect way to unwind. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a good place to stay, as all the best options were already booked. So, we began our return journey and found ourselves in another gem of Kinnaur, Rakchham village. After days of driving and exploring, we instantly fell in love with Rakchham’s charm and peaceful beauty as soon as we arrived. So, we decided to take it easy and stay an extra day here.
• Hotel: Rupin Riverview, Rakchham

Day 10: Rakchham

• Rakchham is a beautiful valley, and we spent the day relaxing & unwinding, soaking in the beauty around us. This quiet, less-traveled valley gave us a chance to connect deeply with nature and experience a slower pace. We spent the day exploring scenic trails along the Baspa River, taking in views of snow-capped peaks, and chatting with friendly locals. Rakchham turned out to be a highlight of our trip, a hidden paradise we were so grateful to have discovered.
• Hotel: Osiya Rangnoo Rakchham Retreat

Day 11: Rakchham to Rampur Bushahr

• Distance: ~200 km | Time: 8-9 hours
• Hotel: Hotel Mahesh

Day 12: Rampur Bushahr to Delhi

• Distance: ~478 km | Time: 12-13 hours
• After a relaxing stay in Rampur, we began our final leg of the journey back to Delhi. This marked the end of our Spiti adventure, but we left with countless memories!

Days 13-15: Delhi to Bangalore

If you’re planning a trip from Bangalore to Spiti Valley like we did, you’ll need to add a few extra days for a stop in Delhi. Since our parents live there, we were able to take a longer break before resuming our journey. You could either stay a night in Delhi before heading back or drive straight through, aiming to reach Bangalore by Day 15.

This Bangalore to Spiti Valley trip was a dream come true, even more so because we did it in our Tata Punch! While the roads and terrain can be challenging, it’s definitely doable with careful planning. If you’re traveling with kids or senior citizens, remember to take it slow, stay flexible, and enjoy the journey!

If you have a few extra days or are starting this trip from Delhi, I recommend adding an extra day in Kaza, another day in Tabo, and one more day in Nako. This way, you’ll have more time to truly experience each place.

As always, the major part of my travels includes clicking pictures and taking videos to document the adventures. As a travel blogger and mom, capturing those perfect moments isn’t just about creating memories; it’s about telling stories that inspire. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there are many easy ways to get good pictures without needing a high-end camera or photography classes. A little creativity, planning, and some tried-and-tested techniques can go a long way in elevating your photos. But don’t get too caught up in perfection, it’s those spontaneous, imperfect moments that often turn out to be the most memorable.

10 Easy Ways to Get Good Pictures

Whether it’s an epic road trip through scenic mountains or a spontaneous stop at a hidden gem along the way, the journey itself is full of photo-worthy moments. For me, capturing these memories means embracing both the chaos and the calm. From the joyful laughter of my little one exploring new places to the peaceful sunsets that signal the end of an adventurous day, every moment tells a unique story. And while snapping pictures is important, it’s also about finding that balance between being behind the lens and truly experiencing the magic of travel with my family.

Let’s check out some quirky, easy ways to get good pictures, especially while you travel with kids!

1. Golden Hour Magic

One of the easiest ways to get good pictures is to shoot during the “Golden Hour,” which is right after sunrise or just before sunset. The gentle glow of natural light adds a soft, magical touch to every scene. Whether it’s a family picture on the beach or a mountain backdrop, this natural lighting will add a glow to your photos.

Plus, kids are usually more energetic in the mornings, perfect for getting those candid smiles. If you’re traveling with kids, make it a fun activity to wake up early, indulge in a morning expedition and capture those lovely moments.

Pro tip: With golden hour being short, plan ahead by having your camera settings ready and equipment on hand.

2. Use Rule of Thirds

Ready to make your photos go from ordinary to extraordinary? Activate the grid lines on your camera or phone and follow the Rule of Thirds. Most people usually like to keep the subject in the middle of the grid lines. But if you place the subject off-center where the lines intersect, you’ll instantly see the difference in your photos.

We went to see Chagzam Bridge, Tawang which is a stunning ancient engineering marvel (from 600 years ago) but unfortunately we reached too early & found it to be locked. This is the other new bridge alongside Chagzam bridge.

Pro tip: The easiest way to use the rule of thirds is by first arranging your camera angle & frame and then taking position as per the grid lines.

3. Play with Angles

One of the easiest ways to get good pictures that stand out is to experiment with different angles. Crouch down to get an upward shot, or stand on a chair for an overhead view. For family photos, especially with kids, go down to their eye level. It captures their world in a much more relatable way, creating authentic and engaging images.

This was clicked at Dirang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh. This was not planned but it was in our destiny to visit this place. The roads got blocked because of a landslide and we got some extra time to explore the area.

Pro tip: Use an extendable tripod or selfie stick to get those drone like shots or simple overhead shots.

4. Look for Leading Lines

Leading lines are natural lines in the scene that draw the viewer’s eye to the subject. Roads, rivers, fences, and even a row of trees can help lead the eye right to your subject, making the photo more dynamic. It’s one of the easiest ways to get good pictures when you’re out exploring new landscapes.

This hanging bridge is in Bhutan. This was not on our itinerary but flow of events took us to this beautiful place.

Pro tip: If you’re at a beach, use the shoreline or footprints in the sand as your leading lines.

5. Use Props for a Personal Touch

Adding a few travel-related props can make your pictures more interesting and relatable. Hats, maps, camera, or even a suitcase in the background can add layers of storytelling to your photos. Plus, props keep kids engaged, hand them a pair of sunglasses, binoculars or let them simply hold a balloon, and you’ll get some cute, candid moments.

Pro tip: Let your child choose their own prop without suggesting it’s for a photo. It keeps things fun and natural!

6. Capture Candid Moments

Some of the best travel photos happen when you’re not posing. Capture moments when your family is deep in conversation, laughing, or even just exploring the area. These unplanned shots often hold the most emotion and tell a more genuine story of your travel experiences.

This is clicked at a famous sheep farm in Sangti Valley, Arunachal Pradesh. Since it was raining when we arrived, the sheep were already back in their sheds. We had nothing else to do so we turned our goofiness on.

Pro tip: Set your camera to burst mode when kids are playing or running around. You’ll capture a series of images that you can later pick the best from.

7. Master the Art of Framing

Natural frames can make your photos look more polished. Doors, windows, trees, or even an archway can serve as frames within your picture, drawing focus to the subject. It’s one of the easiest ways to get good pictures that look professional, even if you’re just using your phone.

Pro tip: Look for archways in historic buildings or nature spots and use them to frame your family or scenic views.

8. Play with Colors

Whether you’re surrounded by colorful buildings or lush green landscapes, pay attention to the colors in your surroundings. Complementing or contrasting colors can make a photo pop. Wearing bold colors like red or yellow against a neutral backdrop will instantly make you stand out in photos.

We were so upset as this was the last day of our Spiti Trip. But then we decided to make the best out of this day and went for a beautiful hike in Rakchham village near Chitkul, HP.

9. Get Creative with Reflections

Reflections can add a magical touch to your travel photos. Whether it’s a reflection in a puddle, a mirror, or a glass window, capturing a scene with its reflection gives the photo an artsy twist. It’s a simple way to get good pictures that stand out from the usual holiday snaps.

Pro tip: Try taking reflection shots after it rains or by a calm lake. Just make sure the water is still to capture a clear reflection.

10. Edit but Don’t Overdo It

Finally, once you’ve taken all these great photos, a little editing can go a long way. There are plenty of free apps like InShot, Snapseed, and Lightroom that offer easy-to-use filters and tools. Just adjust a bit of exposure, shadows and vibrancy to enhance the colors. However, don’t over-edit, it’s important that your pictures still look natural and not overly touched up.

It was raining the whole night and Sumit was worried that this bad weather might ruin our trip. I told him not to think about the whole trip but just this moment and we stopped the car and enjoyed the drizzling before moving on with our journey.

Pro tip: Before moving on to an app to edit your pictures, try using the edit feature on your phone itself. It’s time-saving!

Bonus Tips for Parents:

• Let kids be kids: Don’t force them to pose. Capture them as they explore their surroundings. Natural curiosity makes for the best pictures.
• Patience is key: With kids, especially, getting that perfect shot takes time. Relax and enjoy the moment while you wait for the right shot to come.
• Keep snacks handy: A hungry kid is never in the mood for pictures, but a quick snack can change that!

I had a 2 cm gallstone stuck in the neck of my gallbladder which had been causing acute pain in my upper abdomen & back for the last few months, leading me to visit the ER three times in the last month alone, hence the need for emergency gallbladder surgery. Over the past few months, I experienced gallbladder attacks about 7-8 times. Unfortunately, I had no idea that the pain was related to gallbladder stones. Initially, we kept relating it to gastritis & treated it accordingly, but to no avail.

Before I share my story, let’s understand what is a gallbladder and how are gallstones formed. By sharing my experience, I hope to provide valuable information and support to those who may be going through similar experiences.

Understanding the Gallbladder and Gallstones

What is the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small (approx. 7-10 cm long and 4 cm wide), pear-shaped organ, located in the upper right abdomen just below the liver. Its main function is to store bile which is a digestive fluid produced by the liver. When we eat a meal high in fats, the gallbladder releases this concentrated bile into the small intestine to help in the digestion of fats.

What are Gallstones?

Sometimes, due to some imbalance in the substances that form bile, the bile gets hardened and turns into pebble like deposits in the gallbladder. These gallstones can vary in size, ranging from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. They may not cause any problems or symptoms and can go unnoticed for years but they can cause significant issues if they block the bile ducts.

Types of Gallstones:

• Cholesterol Stones: These are the most common types of gallstones usually yellow-green in colour. Cholesterol stones form when bile contains too much cholesterol and not enough bile acids to dissolve it, often due to liver dysfunction, bile stasis or dietary factors.
• Pigment Stones: These are smaller and are made up of bilirubin usually dark brown or black in colour. Pigment stones form from excess bilirubin , often due to conditions like hemolytic anemia, liver dysfunction or biliary tract infections, which increase bilirubin levels in bile.

Symptoms and Complications of Gallstones

When a gallstone obstructs the flow of bile from the gallbladder or bile ducts, it can cause:

• Severe pain in the upper right abdomen
• Pain that radiates to the back
• Nausea and vomiting
• Indigestion and bloating
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
• Fever and chills (in case of infection)

In case of complications, there can be inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), or infection of the bile ducts (cholangitis).

My Personal Experience with Gallbladder Pain

Now that we have an idea of what are gallstones and how they may lead to various symptoms; let me share my story, my battle with gallbladder pain which eventually lead me to get gallbladder surgery. Hopefully, this will help you in understanding gallbladder attack and what you can do in such cases.

Initial Symptoms and Misdiagnosis

I would get this sudden excruciating pain in my upper abdomen which radiated to my middle back. The strange thing about this pain was it felt similar to severe gas pain. My upper abdomen would get extremely bloated, it felt like a hard balloon being inflated in my abdomen. I could feel the pressure from the inside in my upper abdomen and at the back. While I was in pain, I couldn’t sit or lie down for more than a few minutes. I would also get continuous burps which would bring down the discomfort a bit but within minutes my abdomen would bloat again. Each gallbladder attack typically started at night around 10-11 pm and the pain lasted for 5-6 hours.

The first major incident occurred while I was on vacation in Sakleshpur (town in Karnataka), just a month after my hysterectomy surgery. Despite being in good health, the intense pain out of nowhere, came as a shock. That night, I endured 5 hours of agony before eventually ending up in the ER, where they treated me for gastritis pain before I passed out on the hospital bed.

It’s perplexing that the doctor didn’t suggest an ultrasound to check for gallstones that time. Thus, we also ignored it thinking it to be gastritis pain.

For the next 8-9 months, I experienced only minor discomfort & occasional indigestion. Then suddenly, in March this year, the severe pain returned. Again, I assumed it was gastritis and self medicated, but the pain persisted for 4-5 hours.

Repeated ER Visits and Correct Diagnosis

When the pain recurred later that month and did not subside with medication, I visited the ER again. This time, a doctor suggested that the pain might be related to gallstones and recommended an ultrasound.

That was the first time I heard about gallbladder pain.

We got the ultrasound done asap and that revealed a 2 cm gallstone stuck in the neck of my gallbladder. We then spent the next week undergoing further tests and consulting with doctors to understand my condition better. The gallstone was causing significant pain and blocking the flow of bile, which led to the recommendation for surgery. However, I couldn’t come to terms with that revelation, considering the plans we had made for the coming months. Hence, we decided to explore other options first.

The Path to Gallbladder Surgery

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

After the diagnosis, I learned about the different treatment options. Surgery was recommended as the best course of action but I wanted to try non-surgical methods first. In an attempt to avoid surgery, I made significant changes in my diet, eliminating fats, oils, caffeine, sweets and anything else that seemed bad for my health. Surprisingly, this new diet seemed to relieve my pain for over two weeks. I took it as a good sign and went on with our plan to drive to Delhi from Bangalore.

Now just to check if the gallbladder pain was still there, I resumed my normal diet after reaching Delhi.

A week later, the pain returned, lasting for 6 hours. This experiment made me conclude that the pain was indeed related to my diet. I switched back to the restrictive diet that had previously brought relief.

But then, what went wrong, leading me to undergo gallbladder surgery?
