Gender equality is not a woman’s issue, it is a human issue.

It affects us all.

International Women’s day is held on 8th March every year to celebrate social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all over the world. The theme for this year’s campaign was #PressforProgress and commit to a Gender Parity mindset. Women all over the world are talking about bringing in the change, activists are running various campaigns and movements to empower women for a better tomorrow.

It’s almost a week now that we celebrated Women’s Day, but the celebrations didn’t end there. Neither the campaigns nor the movements. Like many other women out there, I too decided to be a part of the campaign this time by voicing my views and opinions and taking a pledge to #PressforProgress. We have come a long way in this fight for equality still there’s a lot to be done and change. But I never understood why do we have to fight so much for something which belongs to everyone. The Rights, either they belong to everyone or to none. Why are the privileges being asked for? The other half of the population who is making this task difficult for the world need to open up their mind and see. And let me tell you this other half doesn’t only consist of men but also the women who should be ashamed of their mindset.

Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.

The change we seek!

I remember when I was a kid, I used to fight a lot with my relatives for things which they claimed are meant for boys only. For instance, I was not allowed to play outside until late but my male cousins were free to roam around with their friends and were never questioned. I was looked down upon whenever I wore shorts or behaved in a manner which was meant appropriate only for the boys. My cousin sisters were not even encouraged to study further even if they wanted to. Why do we create this gap between genders from such a small age?

Now the times have changed, girls are given more freedom, parents are more considerate of the girl child, they are given equal opportunities and support from the society to a great extent. Still, the gender disparity is an issue as the gap has not yet narrowed down. Now the problems are different but they are there.

A few days back I read this quote somewhere, which said ‘I don’t want a girl child as I am afraid that she will get raped someday.‘ This broke me from inside because somewhere deep down I knew this is the reality. There are no strict laws for such heinous crimes in a country like ours. We want a better world where the women feel secure and respected.

We got to work together to bring about that change, Women’s day is the reminder we set every year to refresh our aims & remind ourselves of what we deserve. All of us, should make our daughters strong if the laws are taking time to be in place. And have to teach our sons the true meaning of respect and strength. Women have to support each other rather than fight and compete aimlessly.

The fear is within and we have to fight it together. I am fighting it, are you?
