Hey guys, today I am sharing about my most memorable & unique trip with my mother. Though my mom & I have traveled a lot together before marriage, this one was our first trip together after I got married, just the two of us. It was special for one more reason, which you will get to know soon. You must have got an idea from the title that this one was my mom’s dream trip to Myanmar. And, being the only child, I had to do my part to make her dream a reality. But why Myanmar?

My Mom’s Dream Trip to Myanmar (Yangon & Mandalay). Why Burma?

My mom was born in Burma (Yangon) & lived there for 9 years with her family before moving back to India. And she still talks about her childhood there & all her memories still seem fresh. She always wanted to visit Burma once in her life, it was one of her dreams & I knew it. But I never bothered to do anything about it all those years.

I remember that I had once told my mom that I would never go to Burma & I will never add it to my travel bucket list. How silly I was!

But when I became a mother, I realized what our dreams mean to us and how it feels when we see them dying. When we think that all the responsibility in the world lies on our shoulders & slowly we start detaching from our desires & goals. When I decided to keep traveling even after becoming a mother, I gave life to my dying dreams.

And, when I was able to give my dreams a direction, how could I not acknowledge my mom’s wishes. One can empower others when they feel empowered. Last year in September, we both planned this trip to locate my mom’s childhood house. And to visit some places from her wishlist.

Well, for me, this trip was not about exploring the destination. It was more about the emotions & dreams of my mom—# MomsDreamTrip.

But let me tell you this decision was not an easy one. Once you become a mother, you really can’t think of leaving your child behind even for a day. Here I was planning to leave my 3.8-year-old son for 6 days & go to another country. A part of my heart was crying for leaving him behind. But the other part was proud & happy to be able to fulfill my duties as a daughter. No doubt, I had to fight a lot of emotions, but they were nothing in front of what my mom was feeling.

From the time we started planning this trip (which took only a week) to visiting each & every place on her wishlist, I could see how ecstatic she was.

A special thanks go to my loving husband and my awesome mother in law for understanding & supporting my decision.

Explored nearby market, ate at a local food joint.

Day 2

Yangon Day Trip

Botataung Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Yangon City Hall, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Shwedagon Pagoda, Karaweik Palace, Kandawgyi Lake, Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market)

Yangon to Mandalay (by overnight train)

When my mother met her neighbors in Myanmar

Day 3

Mandalay

Stay at Ayarwaddy River View Hotel

Located mom’s old house in Thayeze, which is now a Govt. school.

Met her neighbors who still take care of the old Sikh Temple.

Clicked pictures in front of mom’s school, which is now the Mandalay University of Distance Education.

Day 4

Mandalay Day Trip

U Bein Bridge, Trek to Dee Doke Waterfall, Mandalay Hill, Sutaungpyai Pagoda.

Day 5

Phin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) Day Trip

The Governor’s House, National Kandawgyi Gardens, Mahar Aung Kan Htoo Pagoda, Pwe Gauk Waterfall

Day 6

Mandalay to Yangon to Kolkata to Delhi (by flight)
