Using Ensure® Diabetes Care while Traveling

Travel has always been a huge part of our lives. Whether it’s a spontaneous road trip or a planned getaway, travelling brings us closer and gives us countless memories to cherish. However, managing diabetes while travelling has been a challenge! Over the years, I’ve learned that preparation is key, from packing smart to planning meals. And now, adding Ensure Diabetes Care to our routine has made a world of difference.

My husband has been living with diabetes for years, and as his caregiver, I’ve seen how hard it is to manage blood sugar levels, especially on the go. Missed meals, erratic schedules, and limited food options can make it difficult to keep blood sugar levels stable. There were moments when we struggled like when long drives left my husband feeling drained. Or when hunger struck in the middle of nowhere, and the only available snacks were carb-loaded options that could cause a sugar spike.

Ensure Diabetes Care – my reliable travel companion

Friend who lives with diabetes recommended a diabetes-specific nutritional drink, Ensure Diabetes Care, to us. When we checked with our physician to see if it was a good fit for my husband’s needs, he explained the benefits of Ensure Diabetes Care. He told us that it is powered by the Triple Care System of high fiber & Slow-release Carbohydrates, high-quality protein, and 36 nutrients. Now, my husband travels carefree because he knows how to manage his blood sugar levels with Ensure Diabetes Care.

In my previous blog post, I shared some simple tips for traveling with someone who’s living with diabetes. You may check that out. Today, I want to talk about how this one small addition to our daily routine has made our lives easier and our trips more enjoyable.

Why Travel Can Be Tough When Living with Diabetes?

If you or someone you love is living with diabetes, you know travel requires more planning than usual. Before we added this nutrition drink into our routine, travel days were challenging. Early morning departures often meant skipped or rushed breakfasts, leading to fluctuating energy levels. Finding balanced snacks on the road was another hurdle. Many times, we relied on what was readily available, often options were high in sugar and carbs, which could spike blood sugar levels.

Long stretches of driving were especially tough. The fatigue would set in, and with limited healthy food options, it was harder for my husband to feel his best. These challenges often left us feeling stressed and frustrated, taking some of the joy out of our trips.

Managing diabetes should not be a barrier to living life well; it should be as simple as usual. Over the years, we’ve made small but meaningful changes to make daily management easier. Adding Ensure Diabetes Care was one of those small changes that had a big impact.

I still remember a trip where we were worried about my husband’s blood sugar variation during the long drive. That moment made me realize how crucial it was to have a reliable backup for nutrition; something convenient and effective.

Why Ensure Diabetes Care?

We tried Ensure Diabetes Care after consulting with our doctor.
Mid-Day Boost: Travel often means delayed meals or unusual schedules.

Myths About Knee Replacement

The fear of knee replacement surgery is a common concern that often prevents people from seeking much-needed relief. For many, the thought of undergoing such a significant procedure is daunting, largely due to widespread myths about knee replacement. People frequently worry about potential complications, lengthy recovery times, and the overall effectiveness of the surgery. These fears can be so overwhelming that they overshadow the potential benefits.

This fear is further compounded by stories of past failures and outdated information that continue to circulate, creating hesitation and anxiety. Early implants were designed based on the knee measurements of Caucasian people, whose knees are typically larger. These implants were imported and used for Asian patients, often resulting in complications after knee replacement surgery.

However, advancements in medical technology have addressed these issues. Today, implant manufacturers design knee systems specifically for the anatomical structure of Asian patients, significantly reducing the risk of complications.

Despite these improvements, myths and fears still persist, affecting the decision-making process for many. By debunking these myths, we can help our loved ones make informed choices. Let’s explore these common myths about knee replacement and clarify the facts. By understanding the reality, you can encourage your loved ones to take the necessary steps toward a healthier, pain-free life.

Myth 1: Knee Replacement is Only for the Elderly

Reality: A common myth about knee replacement is that it’s only for older adults. This belief can prevent younger people from considering the procedure, even when they would benefit. The truth is, knee replacement is for anyone suffering from chronic knee pain or damage that impacts daily life.

Recently, younger patients, some in their 30s or 40s, have undergone knee replacement surgeries.⁽¹⁾ ⁽³⁾ This is often due to arthritis or injury. Delaying surgery can lead to more severe pain and joint deterioration, making the procedure more complicated later on.

If someone you care about is in pain, encourage them to speak with a doctor, regardless of age. The earlier the issue is addressed, the sooner they can return to an active and fulfilling life. Don’t let myths about knee replacement keep them from relief.

Myth 2: Recovery Takes Years

Reality: Recovery time is one of the biggest concerns people have when considering knee replacement surgery. It’s easy to assume that the procedure will leave them bedridden for months or even years. But this is one of the most misleading myths about knee replacement.

With advancements in medical technology, robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery now offers greater precision significantly improving outcomes. This cutting-edge approach not only enhances surgical accuracy but also leads to faster, more efficient recovery, providing patients with improved mobility and a quicker return to daily activities. Most patients can walk with support just a day or two after surgery. In 3-6 months, many return to regular activities, and some even resume moderate exercise within weeks.

So, if your loved one is holding back because they fear a lengthy recovery based on such myths about knee replacement, assure them that they’ll be back on their feet sooner than they think, because their pain shouldn’t last any longer than it has to.

Myth 3: Knee Replacements Don’t Last Long

Reality: Another common myth is that knee replacements are often unsuccessful or the surgery doesn’t last and will require a redo after just a few years. This fear can make people hesitant to go through with the surgery in the first place. However, this belief is outdated.

Modern prosthetics and surgical techniques have advanced significantly. Today, knee replacements often last 15 to 20 years or more.⁽²⁾ Many patients never need a second surgery. Even for younger patients, the pain relief and improved mobility they experience make the procedure worth it, even if a revision is required decades later.

Encourage your loved ones to see knee replacement as a long-term investment in their well-being. Don’t let them be misled by myths about knee replacement that could stop them from enjoying a pain-free life.

Myth 4: You’ll Be Dependent on Support Forever

Reality: One of the most discouraging myths about knee replacement is the belief that undergoing knee replacement surgery will leave you reliant on crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair for the rest of your life. This simply isn’t true.

Most patients begin walking with support just days after surgery. As they progress through rehabilitation, they regain strength and mobility. Many walk unaided within weeks. The goal of knee replacement surgery is to restore independence, allowing patients to return to the activities they enjoy, without pain.

If your loved one hesitates because they fear losing independence, reassure them. This surgery is meant to restore their freedom. Don’t let them believe in such misconceptions that could hold them back from living fully.

Myth 5: The Surgery is Extremely Painful

Reality: It’s normal for people to fear the pain associated with surgery. However, the fear of post-surgical pain shouldn’t stop anyone from seeking treatment for a better quality of life. Sadly, many people fall victim to myths about knee replacement regarding unbearable pain during or after surgery.

Advances in anesthesia and pain management have made the procedure much less painful than it once was. Today, doctors use a combination of medications to control pain, both during and after surgery. Many patients report that the post-surgery pain is far less than the chronic pain they suffered before the procedure.

More importantly, post-surgical pain is temporary. As patients heal, they experience significant relief. Many notice a reduction in pain and an improvement in mobility that allows them to enjoy life again.

Encourage your loved ones to focus on the long-term benefits. The temporary discomfort of surgery is worth the years of pain-free living that follow. Don’t let myths about knee replacement stop them from getting the treatment they need.

Emergency Gallbladder Surgery

I had a 2 cm gallstone stuck in the neck of my gallbladder which had been causing acute pain in my upper abdomen & back for the last few months, leading me to visit the ER three times in the last month alone, hence the need for emergency gallbladder surgery. Over the past few months, I experienced gallbladder attacks about 7-8 times. Unfortunately, I had no idea that the pain was related to gallbladder stones. Initially, we kept relating it to gastritis & treated it accordingly, but to no avail.

Before I share my story, let’s understand what is a gallbladder and how are gallstones formed. By sharing my experience, I hope to provide valuable information and support to those who may be going through similar experiences.

Understanding the Gallbladder and Gallstones

What is the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small (approx. 7-10 cm long and 4 cm wide), pear-shaped organ, located in the upper right abdomen just below the liver. Its main function is to store bile which is a digestive fluid produced by the liver. When we eat a meal high in fats, the gallbladder releases this concentrated bile into the small intestine to help in the digestion of fats.

What are Gallstones?

Sometimes, due to some imbalance in the substances that form bile, the bile gets hardened and turns into pebble like deposits in the gallbladder. These gallstones can vary in size, ranging from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. They may not cause any problems or symptoms and can go unnoticed for years but they can cause significant issues if they block the bile ducts.

Types of Gallstones:

Cholesterol Stones: These are the most common types of gallstones usually yellow-green in colour. Cholesterol stones form when bile contains too much cholesterol and not enough bile acids to dissolve it, often due to liver dysfunction, bile stasis or dietary factors.

Pigment Stones: These are smaller and are made up of bilirubin usually dark brown or black in colour. Pigment stones form from excess bilirubin , often due to conditions like hemolytic anemia, liver dysfunction or biliary tract infections, which increase bilirubin levels in bile.

Symptoms and Complications of Gallstones

When a gallstone obstructs the flow of bile from the gallbladder or bile ducts, it can cause:

Severe pain in the upper right abdomen

Pain that radiates to the back

Nausea and vomiting

Indigestion and bloating

Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

Fever and chills (in case of infection)

In case of complications, there can be inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), or infection of the bile ducts (cholangitis).

My Personal Experience with Gallbladder Pain

Now that we have an idea of what are gallstones and how they may lead to various symptoms; let me share my story, my battle with gallbladder pain which eventually lead me to get gallbladder surgery. Hopefully, this will help you in understanding gallbladder attack and what you can do in such cases.

Initial Symptoms and Misdiagnosis

I would get this sudden excruciating pain in my upper abdomen which radiated to my middle back. The strange thing about this pain was it felt similar to severe gas pain. My upper abdomen would get extremely bloated, it felt like a hard balloon being inflated in my abdomen. I could feel the pressure from the inside in my upper abdomen and at the back. While I was in pain, I couldn’t sit or lie down for more than a few minutes. I would also get continuous burps which would bring down the discomfort a bit but within minutes my abdomen would bloat again. Each gallbladder attack typically started at night around 10-11 pm and the pain lasted for 5-6 hours.

First major gallbladder attack

The first major incident occurred while I was on vacation in Sakleshpur (town in Karnataka), just a month after my hysterectomy surgery. Despite being in good health, the intense pain out of nowhere, came as a shock. That night, I endured 5 hours of agony before eventually ending up in the ER, where they treated me for gastritis pain before I passed out on the hospital bed.

It’s perplexing that the doctor didn’t suggest an ultrasound to check for gallstones that time. Thus, we also ignored it thinking it to be gastritis pain.

For the next 8-9 months, I experienced only minor discomfort & occasional indigestion. Then suddenly, in March this year, the severe pain returned. Again, I assumed it was gastritis and self medicated, but the pain persisted for 4-5 hours.

Repeated ER Visits and Correct Diagnosis

When the pain recurred later that month and did not subside with medication, I visited the ER again. This time, a doctor suggested that the pain might be related to gallstones and recommended an ultrasound.

That was the first time I heard about gallbladder pain.

We got the ultrasound done asap and that revealed a 2 cm gallstone stuck in the neck of my gallbladder. We then spent the next week undergoing further tests and consulting with doctors to understand my condition better. The gallstone was causing significant pain and blocking the flow of bile, which led to the recommendation for surgery. However, I couldn’t come to terms with that revelation, considering the plans we had made for the coming months. Hence, we decided to explore other options first.

The Path to Gallbladder Surgery

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

After the diagnosis, I learned about the different treatment options. Surgery was recommended as the best course of action but I wanted to try non-surgical methods first. In an attempt to avoid surgery, I made significant changes in my diet, eliminating fats, oils, caffeine, sweets and anything else that seemed bad for my health. Surprisingly, this new diet seemed to relieve my pain for over two weeks. I took it as a good sign and went on with our plan to drive to Delhi from Bangalore.

Now just to check if the gallbladder pain was still there, I resumed my normal diet after reaching Delhi.

A week later, the pain returned, lasting for 6 hours. This experiment made me conclude that the pain was indeed related to my diet. I switched back to the restrictive diet that had previously brought relief.

But then, what went wrong, leading me to undergo gallbladder surgery?

If you or someone you know is experiencing similar symptoms or has been diagnosed with gallstones, I encourage you to seek medical advice promptly. Understanding the condition and exploring treatment options early can make a significant difference in your health and quality of life.

Please share your thoughts, questions or experiences in the comments below. Your input can help others who are going through similar struggles. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I will share what happened that led me to undergo surgery and my experience with the surgery itself, the recovery process and life after gallbladder removal.

Role of Time in Range in Managing Diabetes

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) has simplified the process of tracking glucose levels for people with diabetes. It’s painfree, requires no finger pricks and gives real-time glucose data. In my last post, I shared the benefits of using FreeStyle Libre, a CGM device, in managing diabetes effectively. FreeStyle Libre uses a sensor to continuously measure the glucose present in the interstitial fluid. And the reader can show the current glucose reading, glucose trends, patterns and Time in Range (TIR) data. In today’s post, I will share more about the role of Time in Range in managing diabetes better. And, how achieving a higher Time in Range percentage using FreeStyle Libre can reduce the risk of long-term complications of diabetes.

What is Time in Range or TIR?

Time in Range is the percentage of time an individual’s glucose levels remain within a target range. This target range is typically 70 to 180 mg/dL but it can vary from person to person. Your medical practitioner can help you set your target range. When you use a CGM device, the reader can show you when your glucose has been within the range and at what time it spiked or went down.

Higher Time in Range percentage means that your glucose levels have been in the target range for a longer period of time. On the other hand, a lower TIR percentage would indicate fluctuating glucose levels.

Increasing time spent in range has a positive impact on glucose management and lowers risks of related health issues. In fact, every extra hour in range has a positive impact on your glucose control, and every 10% increase in TIR can lower A1c by ~0.8%. Moreover, spending more TIR can reduce long-term health complications.

Importance of Time in Range in Managing Diabetes

Your CGM reader can show you the exact percentage of time when your glucose levels were in the above/below target range. By utilizing the Time in Range metric you can better understand how your daily activities are impacting your glucose levels. And, in turn, you can take appropriate actions to achieve better overall health.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7456" class=" wp-image-7456" src="https://growingwithnemit.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Time-in-Target.jpg" alt="Role of Time in Range in Managing Diabetes.
Time in Range metric can help people in understanding how well they are managing their diabetes.

By using the CGM device you can aim to keep your glucose levels steady and in range, thus reducing the risk of low blood sugar & high blood sugar episodes.

Time in Range and HbA1c

HbA1c test has been considered an important means to determine the average glucose levels over the last 3 months. And, the doctors rely on the results of this test to understand how well their patients are doing in terms of managing their diabetes. HbA1c also helps in diagnosing prediabetes and diabetes.

Time in Range is an important metric that can be used in addition to HbA1c results to take charge of your glucose levels on a day to day basis. By using a CGM device like Freestyle libre, one can get insights into specific fluctuations or patterns throughout the day. People with diabetes can correlate the periods of high/low glucose levels with certain activities; like meals, physical activity, medications, stress levels or even sleep patterns and make changes in their lifestyle.

Reduce the Risk of Complications with FreeStyle Libre

By using a CGM device, people living with diabetes can easily aim to increase their Time in Range percentage.

Achieving and maintaining Time in Range can reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) episodes. Hence, higher the Time in Range, lower the risk of developing diabetes-related complications.

Since the CGM device keeps you updated at all times about your current glucose levels, your glucose trend and Time in Range, you are always in control of your health.

As soon as you notice the fluctuations, you can take appropriate measures to bring your glucose levels back in the range. Thus, Time in Range empowers you to make informed decisions about your lifestyle choices.

As a caregiver to my husband, who has been living with diabetes, I have noticed how using FreeStyle Libre has made a significant impact on his overall well-being and diabetes management. Understanding and prioritizing Time in Range has been a transformative factor in effectively managing his diabetes.

Uterus Removal Surgery for Fibroids

In April 2023, I underwent abdominal Hysterectomy surgery to remove my uterus due to Uterine Fibroids. It has now been 5 months since the procedure, and I feel ready to share my experience with the world. Ideally, I should have waited one more month to share this health update, as my first ultrasound is scheduled at 6 months from the surgery date. However, I will share another update next month. In this post, I want to discuss how my life has changed both physically and mentally after the uterus removal surgery for fibroids.

Background

I will share a detailed backstory in the upcoming posts. For now, let me share the background in short and move directly to the main topic. I had several big uterine fibroids, one of which was about 20 cm in size. These fibroids caused me a lot of discomfort & extreme pain and all that was affecting my daily life.

Moreover, whatever I was going through physically was also impacting me mentally. There came a point when I was so overwhelmed and disappointed in myself that I wanted to end my life.

Within a span of 5 months, one of the big fibroids had grown from 8 cm to 19 cm. I had continuous bleeding for 2 months, and the pain I endured on most days felt like a knife stabbing me in my lower abdomen. Additionally, I suffered from persistent sharp lower back pain. Some days, I couldn’t even get out of bed. In short, my life had turned into a living nightmare.

Present Day

Fast forward to today, and I’ve not felt this good in the last 6-7 years since having my baby. The lower back pain, which we initially associated with sciatica, has mysteriously vanished. Where has the pain gone?

I have this question because no one, literally no one, told me that this pain could be due to fibroid or endometriosis.

I lost 8 Kgs weight just a month after my surgery. Does that mean my condition was making me gain weight rapidly?

Although I haven’t lost any additional weight beyond that, I haven’t gained any either. So, that’s a good sign, right?

Also, I no longer get periods!

However, I do get mild Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms (which were severe before the surgery) because one of my ovaries is still intact. The exact reason for PMS is not clear to researchers, but some believe that changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle may be responsible.

Initially, I felt sad because I was expecting a life free from anything related to periods. But when I thought about it, I felt a sense of relief. If my hormones were not functioning correctly, it would mean that my ovary was not working, possibly leading to early menopause, for which I am not prepared.

So, PMS still challenges me for about 9-10 days every month, with 5-6 of those days being particularly intense. By “intense”, I mean experiencing wild mood swings, itchy skin around my knees and elbows, food cravings and fluid retention (edema) in my abdomen and feet.

I am just guessing, may be the PMS symptoms might be milder or not present at all if both my ovaries were in good condition. But who knows?

Oh and yes, I have regained control over my bladder. The fibroid was putting so much pressure on my bladder that I was not able to hold urine for more than an hour or two. Yes, it was quite embarrassing, but not anymore!

Managing PMS after Uterus Removal Surgery

The only challenge I am facing in terms of my health after the surgery is PMS.

PMS, or Premenstrual Syndrome, is like your body’s way of giving you signals before your period starts. It can make you feel moody, tired, and sometimes achy. You might also get cravings for specific foods or have trouble sleeping. It’s like a little (for some, harsh) warning from your body that your period is on its way.

As mentioned earlier, I still get PMS, but it’s milder now, which allows me to manage these symptoms more effectively.

Food Cravings

First, let’s talk about food cravings. During those 5-6 days, I crave for more salty, more sweet and more spicy foods. I no longer stop myself from indulging in these cravings because it helps me feel calmer in the moment. The good news is that I can now control the portion size of what I eat.

To balance this out, I make sure not to eat these foods and other junk foods for the rest of the month. Managing food cravings wasn’t this easy before my uterus removal surgery for fibroids. I used to get such cravings for about 2 weeks, and during the next 1 week, I would either be half-dead due to heavy bleeding and pain or depressed due to my periods not knocking on the door. Then, I would overeat not due to cravings but due to stress. I would get only 1 week in the entire month when I felt like eating healthy, home-cooked food.

Mood Swings

Secondly, there are the mood swings. Around the same dates every month, I feel down and tired for no apparent reason. I take 1 or 2 days to confirm that this is associated with PMS. Once I’m sure, I just slow down.

I inform my husband about this, and he takes care that I am comfortable. My son is also supportive during this time, understanding that I need space. Now that I understand what I am going through, I keep assuring myself that everything will be okay, and this is just a matter of a few days. This positive mindset is helping me a lot in managing my emotions.

These mood swings peak for 5-6 days, during which I just shut down completely. I don’t interact with anyone as I know anything can trigger me during this time.

I have noticed that travelling and spending time in nature makes me feel better instantly.

Even before my surgery, travelling was something that would make me forget even the worst of pains. Despite bleeding heavily and enduring constant pain during our Lakshadweep trip, no one could tell the extent of my suffering. In the last 5 months, I travelled twice during my PMS, and I didn’t experience severe mood swings or food cravings during those times. However, I get rashes and fluid retention, for which I’m still searching for a permanent solution.

For the rashes, my gynecologist recommended consulting an endocrinologist and a dermatologist to find out the root cause. Now, I’ll have to wait for my next PMS cycle to show those rashes to the doctor and receive the right treatment.

As for fluid retention, I was advised to do physical activity when PMS symptoms occur. However, from my experience, exercise doesn’t help me much. While fluid retention means that I get chest cramps, I gain weight, and my shoes don’t fit, apart from this, it’s not a much bother.

Life After Uterus Removal Surgery for Fibroids

All in all, my quality of life has improved drastically after the surgery. Physically, I can now do things that were impossible for me before. If you follow our YouTube channel, ‘Growing with Nemit‘, then you may have seen a video where we visited a waterfall, and I was able to climb up and down the hill without any issues. This activity would have been unthinkable earlier due to my back pain, and I often struggled with balance. If you haven’t watched the video yet, then do check it out below.

Mentally, I feel much more at peace now. I have come to realize that physical pain directly affects my mood. Even now, I drown into deep sadness whenever I experience any type of pain. However, before the surgery, the pain was so extreme and constant that it had become impossible for me to come out of that sad phase. And, it had almost turned into depression.

Last year, when I started seeking therapy, I had accepted that I was suffering from some grave mental illness. I was waiting for my therapist to provide a name for my condition. Strangely, she never gave me a straightforward answer, perhaps because she understood that my emotions and feelings were rooted in my physical condition. I can’t say for sure, but this is what I feel.

Since my surgery, I am not taking therapy, and I consider it a huge win as now I am able to manage my emotions on my own. All those feelings of guilt, worthlessness, not doing enough, and not being good enough, are gone.

I had withdrawn from social interactions and ceased communicating with people. Now, after the surgery, I am gradually coming out of my cocoon.

Because now, I feel ALIVE! I want to LIVE Once Again!

Dealing with dry and damaged hair can be a real struggle especially when dandruff and hair fall decide to tag along. This can be extremely frustrating, isn’t it? Well, fret not! With the right hair care routine and products, you can restore your locks to their healthy and lustrous state. In today’s post, I will share some of the best onion oil brands in the market for dry and damaged hair along with their benefits and cons. Apart from this, I will also provide essential hair care tips to help you achieve beautiful, rejuvenated tresses.

5 Major Reasons for Dull & Dry Hair

The first step towards finding effective solutions is understanding the reasons for these hair woes. So, let’s dive right in and uncover the culprits responsible for our hair troubles.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7173" class=" wp-image-7173" src="https://growingwithnemit.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Major-Reasons-for-Dull-Dry-Hair.jpeg" alt="Dealing with dry and damaged hair with dandruff & hair fall can be a real struggle.
1. Excessive Heat Styling & Chemical Treatments

One major culprit is our trusty heat styling tools. Those flat irons, curling rods and blow dryers may give us that perfect look but they also strip away the moisture leaving our locks dry, brittle and prone to breakage. Hair straightening and coloring can be exciting but chemicals used in these treatments can disrupt the hair’s natural moisture balance and weaken its structure.

2. Over washing & Harsh Shampoo

Washing our hair too often or using harsh shampoos or other hair care products with harsh ingredients can strip away those much needed oils that keep our hair hydrated and protected.

3. Environmental Factors

Staying out for too long in the harsh sun, UV rays, in particular, can weaken the hair and lead to dryness and breakage. Strong sun rays, wind and pollution can all gang up on our hair leaving them parched and lifeless.

4. Poor Diet & Nutrition

Many people don’t even accept that poor diet can be a reason for their unhealthy and damaged hair. A diet rich in essential nutrients like, vitamins, minerals and proteins, is necessary for hair growth and maintenance.

5. Hormonal Changes & Stress

Hormonal imbalances caused by factors like pregnancy, underactive thyroid, PCOS, menopause, or certain medical conditions can contribute to hair loss and affect the hair’s texture and quality. Also, high levels of stress and anxiety can impact overall health including hair health.

4 Best Onion Oil Brands in the Market

Hair oiling not only nourishes and moisturizes the scalp but also make the hair softer, smoother, and more manageable. Regular oiling strengthens the hair, reducing breakage and split ends. It also stimulates hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp. The right Onion Oil can soothe and condition the scalp, alleviating dryness, itchiness, and flakiness. Moreover, hair oils act as a protective barrier against environmental damage, such as sun and pollution. Here are the 4 best onion oil brands for dry and damaged hair.

On their packaging, they only provide information about the key ingredients without disclosing the full list of ingredients used in their product.

5 Hair Care Tips to Get Soft, Shiny, Healthy Hair

1. Select the Right Hair Oil for your Hair Type

There are many different hair oils available in the market. It’s crucial that you choose the right hair oil that suits your hair type and addresses your specific concerns. The best way to use hair oil is to warm it before applying on your hair. It’s important that you massage your scalp while applying hair oil as it stimulates blood circulation and aids in the absorption of oil’s nutrients.

2. Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

It’s better if you select a mild shampoo which is free from chemicals, sulphates, silicones and parabens. Look for shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for your requirement. Never skip applying a conditioner after shampooing. Look for hydrating and nourishing hair masks or deep conditioners to restore moisture and repair damage.

3. Use Lukewarm Water for Washing Hair

Always wash your hair with cold or lukewarm water instead of hot water. Lukewarm water helps retain moisture and keeps the hair cuticles smooth whereas hot water can strip the hair of its natural oils.

4. Use a Wide-Toothed Comb and Avoid Over Brushing

When your hair is wet, use a wide toothed comb to gently detangle your hair. Always start from the ends to avoid breakage. And, avoid overbrushing.

5. Switch to Silk or Satin Pillowcase

Consider replacing your cotton pillowcase with a silk or satin alternative. These fabrics cause less friction against the hair, reducing hair fall and preserving the hair’s softness and shine.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7178" class=" wp-image-7178" src="https://growingwithnemit.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/5-Hair-Care-Tips-to-Get-Soft-Shiny-Healthy-Hair.jpeg" alt="Dealing with dry and damaged hair with dandruff & hair fall can be a real struggle.

CGM helps Monitor Glucose and Manage Diabetes Better

Continuous Glucose Monitoring and CGM devices have gained popularity in the past few years. Now more people are choosing CGM over BGM (Blood Glucose Monitoring) as a better means to manage their diabetes. And, this, in turn is helping them to take control of their overall health. However, there’s a huge population who is still not aware of the benefits of CGM. Hence, this question, how can CGM help manage your diabetes better in 2023? Hopefully, this post will help people living with diabetes to make better decisions for their health.

Recently, I attended a session with Blogchatter, where the nutritionist rightly said that one of the most important tools in managing diabetes is self monitoring of glucose levels using a CGM device.

Did you know that 1 in 10 adults or approx. 537 million people worldwide are suffering from Diabetes? And, India comes second with the largest number of diabetics worldwide.¹

As per IDF, this number is expected to go up to 50% by 2045.² Shocking, isn’t it?

We know that there’s no cure available for diabetes, one can only manage it by keeping their blood glucose levels in control. And, to do that, following a healthy diet, physical activity, timely medication and regular glucose monitoring become an essential part of daily life.

However, people with diabetes find the process of glucose monitoring painful & tiring as it requires multiple finger pricks (using glucometer) in a day. My husband has diabetes and he detests finger pricking and thus avoids testing. But he understands that running away from glucose monitoring is not going to help him in any way. Furthermore, ditching regular glucose monitoring may result in diabetes-related complications too.

In one of my previous posts, I discussed about the painless way to monitor glucose levels using a CGM device.

Last year, we switched to a CGM device, FreeStyle Libre by Abbott. Since then, my husband has been happy & relieved as CGM has made his life so easy. He now feels empowered & in control to make informed decisions for his health. Moreover, no more running away as glucose monitoring is not a painful affair anymore!

Let’s talk a bit more about this CGM device and how it works.

What is a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) device?

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) device helps you track your glucose levels throughout the day
and night. This can become a great way to stay updated on trends on whether your glucose levels are going up, down or staying steady.

How does a CGM device work?

The CGM kit, FreeStyle Libre, comes with a Reader, a Sensor and a sensor applicator.

This sensor is a small patch like thing that one has to place at the back of their upper arm using the applicator. It has a very thin filament which goes just under the skin and then measures the glucose present in interstitial fluid.

If you are wondering about the application of this sensor, then let me assure you, it’s super easy & painless to apply. Also, you will not even feel that you are wearing a sensor on your arm after a while. It’s this comfortable!

This sensor keeps on collecting real-time data (current glucose levels) and you need a Reader to read that data. It’s as simple as that!

This reader is a small handheld device (with a screen) that is used to scan the sensor and it stores all the collected data which can be accessed any time.

You know what’s the best part of a CGM device?

It not just gives you the current glucose reading without any pricks or pains but it also shows you the glucose trend. And, this means FreeStyle Libre shows you where your glucose levels have been, and where they are heading. Amazing, right?

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6790" class=" wp-image-6790" src="https://growingwithnemit.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/FreeStyle-Libre-Reader.jpg" alt="How can CGM help manage your diabetes better in 2023?

Common Causes of Eye Irritation

Eye irritation is a common and unpleasant condition that affects many people and can manifest in several forms, ranging from mild discomfort to serious medical complications. Here are the 7 common causes of eye irritation.

To treat eye irritation effectively, it is important to first identify its symptoms and causes.

Symptoms of an Irritated Eye

The symptoms of an irritated eye depend on the source of what caused your eye irritation in the first place. However, these are the most common symptoms experienced:

Watery eyes

Blurry vision

Itching in your eyes

Sensitivity to light

Redness and pain in your eyes

Common Causes of Eye Irritation

There can be several reasons behind your irritated eye – the weather, pollution, or even an irritant. However, it’s essential to find the source for getting instant relief. Here are seven common causes of eye irritation and some ways to fix them:

1. Eye Allergies

You know it’s the allergy season when your eyes start getting irritated, watery, itchy, swollen, and red. You can develop an eye allergy when you come in contact with an allergen (something that causes an allergic reaction), disturbing the membranes of your eyes.

Several allergens could trigger your eye allergy. These may include molds, dust mites, pollens, and pet dander. Eye irritation is a major symptom of eye allergy; you may experience it if exposed to an allergen.

Solution: Major focus is planted on soothing the symptoms to treat eye allergies. Eye drops or OTC medicines might help. But if it persists longer, consult a doctor for a more prescription-based relief plan.

You may also read – Is there a Painless way to check Blood Sugar for managing Diabetes?

2. Other Objects

Objects as tiny as your eyelashes to as large as a glass piece can irritate your eyes and sometimes even harm them. If you feel any presence of a foreign object in your eyes, immediately show your doctor. They’ll throw a small light into your eyes to better see the object and even look under the underlid for any scratched eye symptoms.

Solution: The treatment to fix irritated eyes caused by foreign objects is focused on removing the object from your eyes. And further, depending on what went in your eyes, your doctor may even recommend an antibiotics course to avoid chances of infection.

3. Irritants

Chemical vapors, smoke, or even dust particles can act as irritants and cause eye irritation. Apart from being watery and red post-exposure to these things, you may even feel graininess in your vision.

Solution: If you think your exposure to irritants has caused the irritation in your eyes, make sure to thoroughly rinse your eyes with water (room temperature) for 15-20 minutes. Consult a doctor immediately if you don’t feel relieved after rinsing your eyes. Some irritants may even cause burns in your eyes, causing permanent damage. So, limit your exposure to them.

4. Dry Eyes

Another reason for eye irritation is dry eyes. This can happen when the quality and quantity of your tears are inadequate to moisten your eyes. Tears are why your eyes stay lubricated and moist, and when they are formed insufficiently, you develop dry and irritated eyes that may even seem scratchy sometimes.

Solution: OTC medications like artificial tears may help treat mild dry eyes. However, you need to visit the doctor for prescription-based medicines in severe cases. Some lifestyle changes like decreasing your screentime and quitting smoking may help.

5. Eye Infections

Fungal, viral, or even bacterial infections can cause eye irritation. When you get an eye infection, you may experience an urge to rub your eyes frequently, see swollen membranes around your eyes, have crusty eyelids, or have mucus/pus discharge.

Solution: Viral infections are usually mild and may resolve in a week or two. Bacterial infections must be shown to a doctor, who may prescribe some antibiotics in the form of eye drops. And fungal infections can be in the form of a pill or eye drop, where severe cases need medications to be injected directly into the eyes.

You may also read – What causes Sinus Problems & When to consider Sinus Surgery?

6. Contact Lenses

If you don’t properly look after your contact lenses, they can irritate the cornea of your eyes. Even wearing them for a prolonged period can cause irritation and red eyes. When this happens, avoid wearing contact lenses.

Solution: Disinfect the lenses or replace them as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may advice you to wear them less often.

7. Digital Eye Strain

Using a phone, computer, or other electronic devices for an extended time period can also cause eye irritation. This can be referred to as digital eye strain. It also comes with other symptoms, such as headaches, shoulder or neck pain, or dry eyes. However, digital eye strain is not permanent, and you may feel relieved once you get off your gadget.

Solution: Following the 20-20-20 rule can help relieve irritated eyes caused due to digital eye strain. Take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away after every 20 minutes while working.

Bottom Line

Some causes of eye irritation, like digital eye strain, can go away on their own, while some causes, like irritant exposure or eye infections, need medical intervention. If an irritated eye is bothering you, consult your doctor for relief.

Life in Bangalore – Memories of 2022

Hello everyone, are you ready to bid goodbye to 2022 and welcome the New Year 2023? The one thing that I always do in December is to reflect upon the events that happened so far in the year. It’s like revisiting the memories we made and the lessons we learned. It’s also a reminder that no matter what happens in life, we should keep moving towards the finish line. That’s the only way to stay happy. When you choose to go on with life, it’s when the life chooses you back. This is what I experienced in the second half of the year. So, here’s a glimpse of our life in Bangalore and some of our precious memories of 2022.

You may read Part-1 of this post here- Memories of 2022 – The Most Eventful Year in our Life; where I have shared my 6 memories from 2022.

Memory 7

Corona, Cancelled Flight & Bangalore

We booked our flights for Bangalore well in advance & everything was going well. I was so happy as my mom will also be coming to Bangalore with us. And then, 3 days before our flight, my mom got infected with corona for the second time. The next day, my husband fell sick. My anxiety was touching the roof and I started losing it once again. After 2 days, my son and I also got infected. Everything seemed falling apart.

I was dying from inside but had to put up a brave face in front of my mom. I was smiling and telling her that all this is happening just to prepare us for the new life we are entering into.

We had to cancel our flights as now we had no idea when we could move to Bangalore. Every time corona strikes it feels like the end is near.

But you know what, the moment we accept our situation and stop fighting it, everything fall into it’s place. We started recovering in a week. And, once we got a go ahead from our doctor, we booked the flights again.

Ta-da! And, here we are to start a new life in Bangalore.

Memory 8

Nemit’s 1st Field trip

It was Nemit’s 1st month in a new school and he had already made so many friends there. The school has planned a field trip to Lal Bagh Botanical Garden on the last Saturday of the month. Initially, we were a bit scared to send him alone for a day trip in a new city but looking at his excitement we could not stop him from going. This was Nemit’s first field trip with school.

He had so much fun with his friends and teachers, the day turned out fantastic not just for Nemit but for us as well. I got a chance to go on a morning date with Sumit after sending Nemit for the trip.

It was such a memorable day!

Memory 9

Pain & Naturopathy

I have never been to Bangalore before but it feels like home to me. Never felt this connection with Noida where we stayed for 7 years. My life in Bangalore was going good. The only thing that was bothering me here is my health. I was having constant pain in my lower abdomen and back. And, it was getting worse day by day. But, I kept ignoring it thinking it to be my PMS symptoms or something related to fibroids. My previous doctors have already given up and asked me to get my uterus removed. So, I didn’t make any efforts to meet new doctors here.

I was spending most days in the bed, not able to get up and do my daily chores. I would feel good for a few days and then the pain would come back again. All that pain started affecting me mentally and emotionally. I had lost faith in the doctors (because of my previous experience of failed treatments) and I was losing faith in me as well.

The worst part of all this was it was having a negative impact on Nemit too. I can’t even imagine how horrifying it must have been for this little kid to see his mother suffering like that every day. Sumit tried his best to take care of everything at home so that I could just take rest.

I lost it the day I received a feedback from Nemit’s school saying he’s behaving strangely and not paying attention to anything in the class. I knew it was because of me.

No mother can see their child suffering especially when they know they are the reason for that suffering.

My mom has also come to visit us that month and when she saw me going through so much, she decided to take things in her hands. And, for my son’s sake I agreed to do whatever she wanted me to do. My life in Bangalore was about to change.

Then started a series of doctor visits, tests and scans. My mom found a new doctor in Bangalore who pushed us to try Naturopathy for a few days.

My life took a 180 degree turn when I enrolled myself for 10 days naturopathy treatment at Nature Cure Hospital. I spent those 10 days away from Nemit and Sumit, it seemed impossible in the beginning, but the things settled down soon.

I met the most loving and kind people in that hospital and those were the staff working there. From caretakers to doctors, everyone was so down to earth and so dedicated to their work and towards the patients there, I got my smile back only because of them.

It’s one of my most precious memories!

Memory 10

Bangalore to Goa Road Trip

We love traveling and exploring new places. So, when we came to Bangalore, we listed down all the places we wanted to see. We started exploring known and unknown places every weekend.

Here’s the LINK to our ‘Bangalore’ playlist on YouTube.

And, in October, we planned our first long Road Trip from Bangalore to Goa.

The memories from this trip will always be very close to my heart. After such a long time I was not in any pain and I was able to enjoy fully with my family.

You may check out all the Episodes of Goa Series on our YouTube channel.

Memory 11

Working with Blogchatter

There is one thing which I do only for my own happiness and that’s blogging and making videos. And, this is also the reason that I am not able to do it consistently. But I am learning to make my happiness a priority. I have started taking therapy also as I was told during my time at naturopathy center that my pains are more originating from my mind than from my body. I am putting efforts daily on self care and hopefully it will show up in my work too.

One of the best things about blogging is that I get to work with Blogchatter. They are the ones who made me realize my value as a Blogger. I love how they encourage writers, bloggers and content creators to keep going by bringing various interesting programs. Moreover, they bring to you opportunities to collaborate with wonderful brands and get a chance to earn and grow.

In 2022, I got to work with Abbott for their campaign #LivingFullyWithDiabetes and with Cif for the campaign #DontJustCleanItCifIt. I also participated in the Blogchatter’s #15DaysReelsChallenge which made me forget the pains in my life for those days.

And, now the Blogchatter’s blog hop has pushed me to write once again and bring my blog back to life.

I wish Blogchatter and the team grow more and more and achieve new heights in the comings years too. And, hope that I can make many more memories with them.
