Advantages of Raising your Child with a Pet Dog

Bringing a child into this world is a big step for every couple, as it comes with several responsibilities. Many partners hope to get a taste of parenthood by bringing a pet into the house before having a human baby. This helps them realize what it means to have someone entirely dependent on them. Looking after a dog is not as much work as attending to the needs of a baby, but the experience helps. A pet dog is part of the family and couples love them like their child. Some people think that a dog in the house can be dangerous for the toddler; that is not true unless your dog lacks basic training and social skills. In fact, there are many advantages if you are raising your child with a pet dog.

What are the advantages of raising your child with a pet dog?

Well-mannered pet dogs who understand their boundaries are never a threat to the child. On the contrary, an aggressive or untamed pet can become a problem. Dog bite injuries can be fatal to an infant, thus you need to be aware of your pet’s behavior. If your pet dog is the loving beast it should be, your child can benefit tremendously by having it around.

1 – Stronger Immune System

Raising your kid with a dog substantially reduces visits to the pediatrician. Scientific research proves that the presence of a furry friend in the house boosts the child’s immune system. Children exhibit better resistance against infections and allergies, thereby eliminating the need to ingest antibiotics during the early stages of growth and development.

2 – Budding Companionship and Social Skills

The dog is a man’s best friend, so why not let your child experience that special bond from the very beginning. Your pet will become your son or daughter’s protector and keep them company at all times. Kids who grow up with a pet are better at making friends and general communication. Your kid will never feel lonely and the dog will aid him/her in socializing as well; anyone with a heart is easily drawn towards a furry friend after all.

3 – Development of Responsibility

Toddlers are very observant and rather eager to learn from what they see. A well-mannered and friendly dog shall be a great influence on them. As the child gets older, you can entrust him/her with minor chores like feeding the dog or replacing their water bowl. The child will be happy to do something for the dog, i.e. the responsibility seems like fun instead of a burden.

4 – Active Lifestyle

The advancement of technology has become an obstacle to outdoor activities. Children want to spend all their leisure time indoors, playing video games, or watching shows on T.V. A glorious animal, such as a pet dog is probably the only hope to lure them into a natural environment. Taking walks and playing outside with the dog shall certainly help keep your child fit and active.

5 – Empathy and Kindness

Pet owners are among the kindest people on the face of the earth. Children who are brought up with a pet dog grow up to be compassionate. A person who cannot see their pet in pain shall abstain from harming any other living creature as well. Taking care of a pet teaches a person how to share, compromise, and be sympathetic.

6 – Lower Anxiety Levels

Dogs can make anyone smile with their adorable looks and gestures. Moreover, petting and hugging them triggers stress releasing hormones in the body. If your child ever feels down or on edge, their furry friend will always be there to cheer them up, so they may never suffer from depression.

One of our family friends had a pet dog and he was like their family members. The points the you have mentioned, I have seen them with their family. Here, in US I have seen people introduce their dog as one of their family member.

We didn’t have any pets at home and rushed to pet our neighbour’s dog everyday. Its amazing to spend time with them. Indeed kids learn selfless love and kindness from them.

I completely agree with John on this one. I grew up in a home where we always had dogs. We treated them like our own family members. I found that with my pet around; I was never alone. Thank you for writing this lovely post, it brought back memories 🙂

Having pets at home has it’s own pros and cons. I have grown up with neighbors who had a dog and I know for sure it was a happy and lively household

My entrie childhood was blessed with the company of dogs, at any given time we always had a pair at home. Yes, they are the best companions, and BFFs for life. When I would visit home after an year long break, they could sense the vibes and get excited even before I could ring the bell. Their love is the best feeling ever.

I so wish we could adopt a pet. Due to my mother in law’s health conditions we can’t adopt a pet, even though we badly want to. Your family is truly blessed with such a loving member.

I did a similar blog many many years ago. Furry friends are always fun to have around a growing child. They absorb negative energies and radiate positive energies. This blog is helpful.
